This is a photo of my back gate at dawn today. Looks lovely doesn't it. But that's not snow you see, it's solid ice. I didn't have the energy to clear the driveways and the paths on Sunday, so the paths lost out. No salt to be had anywhere accessible either but that may improve today.
Yesterday the temperature here never rose above -4 and last night it was -11. Today's going to be no better say the BBC.
A few years ago I had a Christmas gift of crampons which are supposedly easy to pull onto boots. Last night I dug them out of their hiding place (yes, surprisingly I remembered where they'd been shoved out of sight) and will see how effective they are as I'm off out to visit friends.

At least you can see your gate! The deep snow up here is also rock hard with little let up in temperatures around -12. At least the ski centres are doing well for the moment.
It's dreadful Clarinda. Can't get the gate open of course. But it's just lethal underfoot.
It's as well ye Scots are a hardy race! Good luck with the crampons, Subrosa.
Blimey SR, it's just as well Max Mosley hasn't read your bit about the crampons. You'd be gainfully employed for years....lol
Its all an excuse to avoid mowing the lawn.
Same here in Dundee. I put out a dish of bread soaked in goose fat for the birds today and no sooner had I turned my back than my pal noticed a wee robin had landed and was checking it out. I could only have been 3 steps away, but the brave wee soul must have been starving... well, plenty more where that came from.
OR my car wouldn't start even though it was in the garage! lol But I did spend quite a time chipping ice.
Demetrius, that's my relaxation, moving lawns. Hope they're not going to get waterlogged when this is over because they're prone to that and I've spent a lot of time trying hard to get them like bowling greens before they're mowed. :)
The birds are starving Tris. I put water out today and it was frozen within 10 minutes although a few dozen had a drink beforehand. Fat is good because although it hardens quickly it melts quickly too.
We've had very little snow so far. Temperatures have been fairly moderate between -5 -10 c (coldest was -20). A very mild winter - long may it last.
Met Office says more coming for New Years Eve yet still cling to their long term forcast that this will be a 'mild' winter.
