No, not this photograph
Sarah and Gordon Brown posed for photographs yesterday at the entrance to Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp in Poland.
I have purposely not published any of the photographs as I find them distasteful. It's quite obvious the PR machine in No 10 has collapsed or else the Brown's desire for publicity has become an obsession. Such self-interest doesn't reflect well on a man who holds the position of Prime Minister.

It is becoming increasingly clearer to me that Brown is preparing himself (and his wife) for the his inevitable afterlife when he is deposed as Prime Minister. This is another part of his calculated plan to position himself as the champion of the poor, the disadvantaged and the victims of war and obscene regimes throughout the world.
He will set up some form of charitable foundation when he is booted out (a la Blair and Cherie) and spend his time advising on how international funds should be used to achieve his vision of reducing child poverty.
The sooner the better for me!
His wife already has a charity in the name of the daughter they lost so you're on the right lines there Ted.
Why do labour PMs think they are saviours of the world? Must be something in their rule book.

Perverse, I was in Dachau a couple of years ago researching Propaganda for Psychological purposes, not one person was posing for pics.
The gates there have a poigniant message "Arbeit macht Frei" - glad NuLiebore are going to be remembered for equally dark behaviour - makes you sick.

I used to do a lot of work in Poland and spent several days in Krakow.
i went down that salt mine, with the Cathedral and did other touristy things. The one thing I wanted to do but couldn't muster the courage was to visit Aushwitz.

I a a fully paid up Atheist but sometimes I wish there was a real God of The Old Testament to send down a thunderbolt and carbonise that apology of a human being. I would even plant a couple of trees by was of carbon offset.

Scunnert has a erally good series of video on his site regarding Englishness.
This is a segmented TV series which takes 6 Englsh people , by self definition, some of a BNP style and including Carole Thatcher, daughter of Saint Maggy.
They are questioned over how they define themselves with respect to nationality.
Then they offer up a cheek swab for DNA profiling as to their racial origins.
The results are astounding and in some cases hilarious.
Takes some time to watch and jumps about a bit in flow but as I say, take the time and enjoy it.

Seems like the English are no homogeneous gene pool that go way way back but a right Heinz 57 varieties, and no less for that.
Now we know why the English, according to Dr David Starkey, are unique in having no national dress. It is because this would be a French Beret or a Fez, a pair of leather breeks or Greek Pantaloons, wearing wooen clogs or grass wrappings. This is the just the people who have blonde hair and blue eyes!
It is really funny to see their reactions to their racial origins.
Just goes to prove the the definition of nationality has be be based on cultural values rather than perceived racial ones.
I just wish that I cold give the Little Englanders who infest France with copies of this programme on DVD

Oh Brownlie, I'm glad you've never seen a photo of me! That one I put was when they were 'walking' to their Conference last year if you remember. You know, doing another photo call.
FC it's a long time since I was there. Belsen I found more tragic, don't ask me why. Mind you, since the days I visited these places they have been 'modernised' for the visitor I believe.
I missed that FC, I usually read scunnert's blog daily. Will have a look. Can do it in the evenings so thanks.

Labour have a use for Auschwitz. George Robertson made a speech there, making sure he mentioned the 'dark side of nationalism'. You will also remember the outcry from Labour when the SNP ended school visits to the camp. And now this photograph. What is going on here?
The subtext to this line of PR is 'look at us - we are not fascists, we don't approve of fascism. Fascism is them, not us'. It hopes to distance Labour from that sort of extreme authoritarianism, lest we take the evidence of our own eyes and notice that that is in fact what they are dragging us towards. It is a sort of reverse camouflage - instead of looking the same as their background, they place themselves against an unpleasant background and try to look different.
Pretty much the same dynamic is in play at the memorial services at the Cenotaph. 'We must never let this happen again' they say - as they arrange new illegal wars of aggression - wars that the military tribunal at Nuremberg called 'the supreme international crime'.
For Labour, Auschwitz is their Picture of Dorian Grey.
Plenty folk feel like you TP. The Mail has a whole set of the bluddy photos - nauseating.
Thank you Vronsky I had quite forgotten about George Robertson and his speech.
I protested about teenagers being sent to Auschwitz as I thought it wrong. It's some place best visited when you're older if you feel the need to visit at all.
Good comparison and I would agree with you. Why are we giving £60m to the cause too? Auscwitz is very well funded and there are other less well-known charities which would have appreciated even a few thousand.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who found this distasteful and inappropriate.
I was particularly sickened by the posed picture of Mrs Brown crying. I have no problem in admitting that I too, would probably cry, were I to go there. I just wouldn't use it as a publicity shot.
Cheap and nasty doesn't come anywhere near saying what I think of this little caper. And most disrepectful to the memory of real and vile suffering, to use it for publicity.

It's all too much for me I'm afraid Tris. I know it's 'only' photographs but it shows the mentality and morality of these people and I don't like it, I don't like it at all.

Pretty persuasive post, James. The question is which damnation should Labour choose? As in all real moral political decisions, it's a choice between the lesser of two evils.
