But if you choose the selection criteria so that everyone can pass you end up with a society that IS stupid but thinks that it is made up of geniuses.

I have in mind those RAF recruits who claimed compensation because they couldn't march to the pace of their unit.

Surely the key word in education must be – ‘opportunity’.

It should be the duty of any education system to furnish every child with the necessary knowledge and encouragement in order that each individual child may have the ‘opportunity’ to be all that they can be.

Maybe it is not all taking the same exam is the problem but what that exam is designed to find out. The results should reflect the strengths and weakness (more akin to an aptitude test) of candidates so that they are then set into an environment that allows them to reach their full potential.

The purpose of education is to enthuse.

What if the elephant uproots the tree to sit on the branches? Does he/she get a bonus for initiative?

Agree Jim, but surely there’s still enough common sense left in the world to set a criteria suitable for the country’s needs.

Didn’t know about those RAF recruits. Will go and google that.

Exactly JRB and if I may broaden it slightly to read ‘opportunity to discover broad horizons’.

Our schools should be providing the talent for our economic success Antisthenes, so business should be saying what it needs and subjects taught to meet their needs.

I can remember we used to get aptitude tests every Friday in primary. That was nearly 60 years ago. Didn’t do us any harm.

Unfortunately Crinkly, there don’t seem to be many teachers who are capable of enthusing these days. Mind you, when I was at school only about 50% enthused me.

So sorry, I notice I’ve replied using my ‘other’ name. Thought it had changed because I did change accounts. Will have to be more careful. :)

Pass Demetrius. :D

@Demetrious. Sorry but No.

For uprooting the tree the elephant is branded an anti-social troublemaker and expelled from the class.
Without any formal education he has little opportunity in life and spends his days roaming the dusty savannah.
He becomes but a mere tourist attraction for wealthy sightseers on safari. He is lucky if he can even find himself a demeaning job in a circus somewhere.

… if only he had applied himself in class, what might he have become?

So true JRB, so true.
