Birthday Treat

library photo

As a birthday 'treat' I have my second acupuncture treatment this afternoon for neck problems. Many years ago in a car crash (no fault of mine) I suffered bad whiplash, but of course in those days you were given a collar thing to wear for a week and that was that.

I've ignored the stiffness and aches for a long time but recently decided to do something about them - mainly because they were interrupting my sleep. So the physio suggested sticking these needles into me when I visited her on Tuesday and wants another stab at me today.

Is it working?  Can't really say but I still needed paracetemol during the day on Wednesday and yesterday.  Early days I know and she says we (I like her use of the royal term) should know by the end of the third session which is next Tuesday. Seemingly the treatments have to be close together to get the best result.

Wish me luck!

Much sympathy - neck pain is no joke. Acupuncture, on the other hand, offers much in the way of potential humour - some of it true. If you'll forgive a rambling anecdote...

My former GP (now retired) was a great one for acupuncture as well as being rather absent-minded. A friend went to him for back treatment and, left alone with the needles in her back, found the whole thing so relaxing that she drifted off to sleep.

She woke up in total darkness in a deserted surgery at 4am. Fumbling for a light switch, she set off the motion-sensor burglar alarm which summoned the police; a helpful WPC helped her to extract the needles before she went home.

(I am pleased to say that it never crossed her mind to sue; there was no damage done and the GP is a friend. By coincidence, a similar story was reported earlier this month in Austria; I wonder how many more people this has happened to who didn't go to the papers.)

PS Happy Birthday!

Happy Birhday Rosie.

Wait till the needles are extracted before you have a wee dram to celebrate. You wouldn't want the precious liquor to leak out of the back of your neck before it's achieved its objective, would you?

Many happy returns, Subrosa. Try a board under the mattress. Worked for me!

When I saw the title of today’s piece and the accompanying picture, the following tune leapt to mind -

“Treat” – Mmm – but enjoy it anyway.

Happy Birthday

Great tale Macheath, but don't suppose your friend enjoyed it too much. :)

My only other experience was years ago. I can't remember why but I went to this chap who was highly recommended. (Something to do with a frozen shoulder I think it was).

Anyway, he stuck all these pins in then put corks on top. I was lying there watching and wondering, only to be astonished when he lit the corks. The smell of burning wasn't pleasant.

However, there was more to come. He then announced I would have to stay still for 20 minutes and said he'd be back then! That 20 minutes felt like a very long time. :)

Can't remember if it had any effect. My muscles took days to relax after the shock. :)

Jings Joe, I didn't even feel like drinking a glass of water. Strange feeling.

Bought a new mattress last month OR to see if it would help. Not sure if it does but certainly it's more comfortable overall.

Getting older has no positives JB. I thought when I was young that life was a battle at times. Now it's just one long war. :)
