The Community Spirit

The children of Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat 5th Grade spent 10 hours of one of their weekends making this video for their local community.

Quinhagak (ref. Wiki) is in Alaska and the city had a population of 555 according to the 2000 census. Then there were 137 households and 113 families residing in the city. It's main income is commercial fishing and a cannery.

Most households still practice subsistence hunting and gathering.

The weather today in Quinhagak is -22 degrees but feels like -32 degrees and probably it was similar when the video was made.

The children must have known it would be very cold outside when they decided to record the video for their families and friends but they were undeterred.

Of course they will be accustomed to such a climate but I do admire their spirit and the fact that, although it was a school project, the filming took place outside school hours.  Would that happen here?  No. There would have been months of Health and Safety risk assessments and various permissions required before recording could begin.

The 'modern' UK may have gained a more comfortable lifestyle for many, but we've also lost attributes which will never return.

Enjoy!

That's fantastic, Rosie. Funny howe Handel seems to suit the Arctic landscape very well. (I assume you have also seen the Silent Monks doing the same? Search on YouTube for it if not - it's cracking.)

Happy Boxing Day!

Morning Richard. Yes I did see it performed by the monks but I think the children have taken it one step further by performing outside in temperatures we seldom experience (certainly not this year).

Happy Boxing Day to you. It's dreich here but I should visit friends.

Hi Rosie,

Happy Boxing Day and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. That's a great video. Thanks for posting it.

I wanted to let everyone know that (consider it a Boxing Day gift) Freedom's Sword is free today and tomorrow on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freedoms-Sword-Historical-Scotland-ebook/dp/B004RUZPPY

That's for Kindle but if you don't have a Kindle there is a free Kindle app for about every imaginable device. :-)

A happy Boxing Day to you Jeanne and I hope you had a pleasant day yesterday.

How kind of you to do that. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it and do hope others take advantage of your super offer.

We had a very pleasant Christmas. I'm lucky like that. Unfortunately, having received a new Kindle, I'm now trying to fill it with books. :-)

Me too, me too!

That will keep you occupied until New Year Jeanne. :)

There's your first book then Richard - and it's FREE!

Done! I'll look forward to reading that, although there is already a queue of several, after I discovered how many classics there are on Amazon at £0.00. Kid, sweet shop.

Aye Richard, it's handy having the classics at your fingertips, but I won't be doing away with my bookcases.

There are other sites Amazon highlight which also provide free books which you can download. I've read a few good ones from other sources.
