A Well Deserved Promotion

While Scotland's rugby team failed to make it through the pool stages of the World Cup, our football team failed to qualify for even the play-offs to reach Euro 2012 and our golfers are struggling to make their mark on the world's golf courses, one young Scot was flying the flag and quietly picking up trophies in Asia.

Any Murray has now won three titles in succession and has lost only one of his last 26 matches.  His trophies are the result of winning the Japan and Thailand Opens and the Shanghai Masters. No mean feat.

After losing out in the US Open semis he was determined to strive harder and he's has, but winning a Grand Slam is his dream.  Since winning in China he has been promoted to No 3 in the world rankings, leapfrogging Roger Federer for the first time in his career. He's well aware he needs to win more matches to hang on as No 3 for the year, but I do not doubt his commitment for a second.

This is a well deserved promotion for a lad who represents Scotland and the UK with unfailing determination. I wish him well, as ever.

Please let that put a smile on his face and just a trace of enthusiasm into his voice. He makes Gordon Brown seem animated.

But yes, indeed, congratulations to a sporting Scotsman. Long may he continue to enjoy that measure of success.

I freely confess to having little, or more precisely, no interest in tennis.
That tennis which I do watch is done merely because I would rather watch a sport than a soap.

However, I cannot help but notice that on those occasions that I do watch ‘our Andy’, there lurking in the background is the ever present, positive and forceful Mummy Murray.
Surely the time has come for this young man to cut the apron strings and stand on his own two feet. It just might be the making of him.

I would say if his mum is the manager then so be it, look at the previous successful teams ie manager and star, Tiger woods dropped his guy look at him Robbie Williams dropped his guy look at him you get the idea.

I think he is so dour , because he is having to be staid and diplomatic, look at the stooshie when he said tongue in cheek he would support the team playing England in the world cup, you can hear the sneering in the voices at Wimbledon who refuse to give up Henman hill, Henman a player who is a shadow of a player that Murray will ever be.

Murray is nos 3 in a world that has seen the best three players ever to play the mens game, so to get to 3 ahead of the best ever Federer should be appreciated for the effort and the team behind Murray. I just wish he will win to see the vinegar faces force a smile on their faces that a Scot has won their empire cup , sorry meant Wimbledon.

Well done - fair enough - but I still think he's a sulky, humourless kid.

Tris, he's a tennis player not an actor. Just because he's not a smiley, jovial media personality shouldn't matter, but of course it does in this media-mad world. Sadly.

I used to play tennis as a teenager but rugby is my favoured spectator sport JRB. However Andy Murray has resurrected an interest in tennis for me, mainly because he plays an exciting game.

Don't think his mother will go far away. She's responsible for youth tennis in Scotland and is part of the UK tennis setup.

Whether he takes much notice of her these days I wouldn't know.

Simonp, now you've made me smile. :) The empire cup indeed.

He's not particularly comfortable being in the media as I think he has rather a shy nature (many professional sportsmen do I'm told) but he tries.

He may be Dioclese, but he's achieved more than any other British tennis player since Fred Perry.

I think it's great that he is just himself instead of faking some media personality. He may be dour but he seems courteous enough and I suspect he wouldn't be told to "cut the apron strings" if were his father managing him. Why shouldn't he let her manage him if he trusts her and she does a good job? It would be the making of him? He looks like he's made it pretty darn well with his mum's help.

Jeanne, if he were English I doubt his personality would be described in such a way. Just a thought...

Can I agree with JR Tomlin - I gather from people who know him well that he has a droll and quick sense of humour but takes his sport very seriously - as he should - somewhat different from the common antics of many of todays so-called sportsmen that embarrass the inside pages and screens of our MSM.

You can agree with Jeanne Clarinda. :)

Well, SR, professional sport is entertainment after all, and he is paid obscene amounts of money, which many of his fans can only dream of. It's wouldn't hurt him to be a little less unprepossessing.

There are hundreds of footballers earning vast amounts of money Tris and can hardly string a sentence together. Have you ever watched some of Murray's lengthier interviews?

Being interviewed two minutes after playing tennis for 3 hours and assessing the player's media performance at that time is quite unfair.

Never mind Tris, I support him enough for the two of us. :) He's been good recently and not too many early rises to watch matches.
