Another Country Proclaims Its Independence This Weekend
The capital is Juba and the country is Southern Sudan.
Tomorrow Salva Kir (pictured), the newly elected president, will welcome the UN's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and up to 40 heads of state and government to witness the proclamation of independence for the newest country in Africa.
The new state will be roughly the size of France and will have sole possession of and authority over more than 80% of Sudanese oil reserves but there is doubt whether the poverty-stricken region's oil wealth will be enough to guarantee its survival.
Corruption and low productivity are just a couple of the country's problems.
I wish the Southern Sudanese well.
