I've never donated to the RSPCA. It's not because I'm tight fisted, but many years ago I attended a conference where representatives of many charities were present, including the RSPCA. Owing to various comments by the RSPCA reps during that weekend, I vowed I'd never give a penny to their cause. They're doing very well without my contribution it would seem because they receive £115 million a year in donations.
Therefore it's no surprise to me to find that the police are now the charity's enforcement wing. They've been accumulating more and more power for years and nobody has said a word. 'It's for the animals you see'.
Christopher Booker has one of their latest publicity stunts here and he's absolutely correct when he asks: 'When did Parliament empower RSPCA officials (all ordinary members of the public) to order our police around?' Of course the RSPCA haven't any legal powers to behave in this manner but why are the police allowing themselves to be used in this manner by a once reputable charity?
To avoid confusion the RSPCA has nothing to do with the SSPCA which is a completely separate organisation.

I contribute to the SSPCA Rosaa.
The RSPCA get nothing from me, l found them arrogant and uncaring.
l do have respect for PDSA though
I wouldn't give a penny to any animal charities - people need money more. I object to the tv ads telling me that puppies need my money.
The police, and the RSPCA/SSPCA have exactly the same powers we do.
Just because they wear uniforms matters not a damn.
We have just as much power as any other sentient being in this United Kingdom.
Matter of fact, (and this may surprise some), now that I am in Lawful Rebellion, I possess more power than the queen.
Of course, communicating this nugget to the boys in blue may be a tad triflesome.
Nevertheless, I shall persevere.
(Bring me cakes. Big ones. With files inside).
CR.
I had a young bird in my garden with a broken wing. I rang the RSPCA who advised me to "bash it on the head and put it out of its misery"
I thought this was unacceptable. I rang again and got someone else who told me to put a basket and a blanket over it to keep it calm and someone would be round to help. Two days later, a man in a van came round, put it in a box and took it away. He said it would be patched up and put in a bird sanctuary. Very reassuring if a little slow...
...but I bet they bashed it on the head!
(I tried the RSPB as well, but they said take it to a vet. My local vet said take it to the RSPB!)
I think the best thing to do when questioned by the RSPCA is to say nothing. Total silence.
They have the same powers as you and me to question people.
None.
Let's not forget that the RSPCA gamekeeper has turned SSPCA poacher http://is.gd/ezwPV
Good for you Conan. It's a well run organisation - at least it was when I had something to do with it. PADS is wonderful but they're more England based I think.
I don't give either Belle. My charities are the Ninewells Cancer Trust and the Salvation Army plus a military one. Each get a donation around Christmas time.
You'll succeed CR, I know you will. It's the bullying attitude of the uniforms that intimidates but these days I can handle that.
Dioclese, you've reminded me of a similar incident with my neighbours in Shropshire years ago. She was a real animal lover and she found out the bird had been destroyed. She didn't have go for them though. We held a small protest outside their offices one afternoon - placards etc and the local paper ran the story.
Excellent advice RM.
Great link, thanks vet. In recent years I've only had a couple of occasions to contact the SSPCA. Stray dogs. They like my front garden. The SSPCA were along within the hour twice and took them to their kennels.
Pity they don't have a follow up procedure though. It would be good to know what happened.
I should have put in the post that the SSPCA has certain legal powers when the RSPCA does not.
I wrote this tonight. The RSPCA figure in it quite prominently.
Many thanks for the link Frank. I thought Dick and yourself were joking when I first read about this. But seems not.
The only joke appears to be our police force.
Ah, I wondered if anyone else had read this. Appalling case, utterly appalling.
It is isn't it Julia.
Many years ago I had concerns about a semi-feral cat and her kittens that were living in a deserted glass blowers near to where I worked. Another person called the RSPCA who duly came along and caught the cat and her kittens.
As the person from the RSPCA was leaving I asked how easy it would be for them to re-home the cats, to which he said they would not, they would be put down when he got back to the RSPCA centre.
From this and other conversations I have had I came to the conclusion a long time ago the RSPCA kill more animals than they save. I support other animal rescues - never the RSPCA.
My old dog, Tess, came from the Blue Cross who do great work and my two cats from Walsall Cat Rescue. There are lots of other, usually local, rescue centers doing a lot more for animals with fewer resources than the RSPCA ever do.
Rosie, all this animal rights pish gets on my wick. I love animals and have always had dogs and cats but animals don't have any RIGHTS. We are the dominant species and any rights they have, are given by us. If the Martians land and they are the dominant species, our rights go right out the window. (BTW as I write this, my cat is rubbing up against my leg, spooky or what)?
That's the problem though Derek. Everyone is brainwashed into thinking the RSPCA is the best yet they are not. Many local shelters provide a far more humane service and, as you say, without much funding.
Be afraid DL, be very afraid - that's no coincidence. ;)
