Purnell Standing Down

James Purnell, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, Greater Manchester, has announced he will leave Parliament at the general election.

He quit as work and pensions secretary after last year's local and European elections, calling for Gordon Brown to resign as prime minister.  He had hoped other colleagues would join him but none wanted to put the country before their careers.

Peter Mandelson said he was 'sad' about him going as an MP.  He's obviously very upset as you will gather from the glowing accolade.

Wise move from Purnell though.  He possibly realises Labour will lose the election and doesn't want to spend years in the wilderness.  I had him earmarked for Labour leader at one time too!

Let's hope his domestic habits have improved now he has decided to move back to the real world.

I'm sure he could be photoshopped back into the Labour party at some stage ;-)

Ah QM, that's what it was! I was trying to recall what else he'd gained notoriety for.

I'm sure Take That will be glad he's free to rejoin them.

If he's regarded as a loss to Labour, he's no loss to society in general.

I did wonder what you meant by 'his domestic habits' so I clicked on it.

Now I know London's water is bad , generally believed to have been filtered through 11 sets of kidneys before it's discharged to the Thames; but could it be the source of their pickled brains, their incompetence and corruption?

If you look at his constituency figures for 2005 and know that district you will see that he is amongst those MP's most vulnerable to a surge in the BNP vote if enough votes are lost by Labour. Clearly he has already made up his mind.

Demetrius, I hadn't looked at these figures. Makes a lot more sense as to why he's standing down doesn't it.
