Kenneth Roy - Glasgow North East

Many of you will know by now that I'm a regular reader of the Scottish Review and in particular a fan of the journalist Kenneth Roy. My interest in his writings goes way back to the heady days when the Scotland on Sunday was launched, when I thought Scotland would finally have a newspaper which would cover the political contrasts within the country. My dream never materialised.

This post is about Kenneth Roy's latest article in the Scottish Review entitled 'The Silence of the Poor'. Below are a couple of extracts which I'm sure will encourage you to read the whole piece.

Sighthill once existed not as a bad name for ethnic relations, but as a community of skilled workers in the Victorian age of railways. There were, for example, the famous Sighthill Shunters. They were more than shunters. They were debaters;

It would not be at all surprising if the fascists saved their deposit in Glasgow tomorrow night. If that evil comes to pass, the recent history of the constituency should tell us why.

And people still think Labour are the party of the working class poor.

I've heard tell that only a few journalists covered the BNP surprise visit to Sighthill.

One observer noted that there were several instances of impromptu supporters striding up to Griffin and shaking his hand.

This contrasts rather starkly with the image in most of the media of the wee Glasgow wummin giving the fat fascist a finger wagging.

I sadly believe they will finish third ahead of the Tories and Lib Dems. Well done Labour.

Incidently, check my blog - I know for a fact that the BBC have been forced to issue an apology to a senior SNP politician as a result of a shockingly inaccurate TV broadcast at the SNP conference in Inverness.

Details later.

Thanks for the link. I too remember the Scotland on Sunday when it started - high hopes! It was pretty good though, and then the Barclay brothers bought it...

Powerful stuff.
No wonder yer a fan of his Subrosa.
ye can add me to yon list of fans too.

Makes the Hootsmon scribblers resemble an undesirable substance one occasionally finds clinging to the underside of a shoe.

That's for sure.

Aye it was good in the beginning wasn't it BoT? You could have good arguments if you were willing to put pen to paper.

Then, as you say, the Barclay brothers bought it...
