Sorry to plunge straight off-topic, but this tiny, tiny piece on Teletext last night would appear at first sight to be very important. So, I am wondering why nobody else seems to have noticed? How odd!
The UK Government will set out its plans to strengthen Scottish devolution this autumn, it has been announced.
Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy said the Government proposals will "draw on" recommendations made earlier this year in the report by the Calman commission on devolution.
This recommended a sheaf of "reforms", including giving Scotland greater powers over income tax.
I'm hoping to get a guest post from one of my Irish readers Howard. He's busy setting up another blog at present but I'm sure he'll give us an update shortly.
In general i'm in favour of further integration with Europe, adoption of the Euro, far greater democratisation of and extended powers to the European Parliament etc. I'd like to see a stronger Europe for many reasons, particularly to act as some kinda counterbalance to the US and China.
It's obvious why the usual anti-Europeans (extreme wing of the Tory party, UKIP, BNP etc) are opposed to the Treaty but can you give me some of the reasons why sensible people oppose the Treaty? I'm genuinely interested and genuinely a bit ignorant of what it's all about.
I'm not in favour naldo. I would much prefer if we stepped back and took the position of the Scandanavian countries for example - be a member of the Council of Europe but not controlled by it.
Anyone else out there into Europe like i am and keen to tell me what's wrong with the Lisbon Treaty? It cannae be just the anti-Euros who're anti-Lisbon.
Here's another wee question. Is it acceptable for people living outside of Ireland to attempt to influence the debate on an Irish referendum? I dinnae think so. I'm right keen to break up the UK but fair take the hump when Sean Connery has the temerity to bang on about Scottish independence whilst swanning round Spain with his knighthood and those craggy good looks (apparently).
And may i be the first Edinburger to say that the lovely Sean never went out with my mum, played fitba with my dad or delivered milk to my granny.
We once escaped from the vile threat of the imperialist Jack-Boot in the first half of last century which took the vast losses and efforts of two world wars - plus the rest. Ever since there has been a concerted effort from much of the same political non-democratic, vested interest regime to impose exactly what we once successfully resisted and prevented for moral and national principles and interests. These principles and interests are no less today than they were then - at least in the mind of many who cherish what ought to be our independent liberty to freely select our democratic pathways.
Now, in the pathetic guise of the EU Gum-Boot a softer-toed but equally bruising form of political mass control and domination is being fraudulently imposed upon us. The EU Gum-Boot is just as impervious to external democratic processes and precedent as were the originators of the Jack-Boot's paranoid control-freak tendencies.
Ireland has already resisted the EU Gum-Boot. But, true to the form of the bully, Ireland, having once refused to be subjugated, is to be booted again until it cries "Surrender"? We, meantime in the UK, are being suckered into silent capitulation to EU imperialism. Does anyone really think the Tories will give us a vote that will make any difference?
Jack-Boot or Gum-Boot I refuse to 'follow orders' from those at the snivelling level of the mediocre EU panjandrum - while the mass transportation of our national laws, culture, liberties, political franchise and daily living experiences etc. dumps our precious individuality in some ghastly mass graveyard.
The creation of an EU Elite Guard presiding over a docile population duped to accept the subterfuge of united national public benefit is in reality nothing more than a contrived conglomerate for private vested interest and advantage.
Please Ireland, give the odious EU Gum-Boot some proper Irish welly into the long grass. Let's have trade and market relationships but not social suffocation.
Naldo - my views about the EU re-election in Ireland say more about my attitude towards democracy and it's side-lining by the contrivance of holding a further election on the same issues previously rejected. Why should this irrelevant repitition be imposed - if not the bully-boy antics of the EU being held in greater regard than an independent nation that has already given it's decision? ....... and, excuse me, but isn't the outside influence of the EU trying a little too hard to coerce Ireland!
Clarinda, to liken the EU to Nazi Germany is contemptible and dishonours the memory of 6 million plus victims of the Holocaust and the many millions more of all nationalities who died to rid us of its evil.
Oppose the EU if you wish but keep your arguments in perspective.
a wee bit OTT Clarinda but I a sure you feel better for it.
I live in Continental Europe and see as much to deride and dislike in it but the Jack Boot is not where the EU is going. Arguably it is the EU which will stop, maybe has (who knows yet) the rise of the Jack Boot in some its constituent members.
Remember the The European Coal and Steel Federation which was the forerunner of the Rome Treaty was designed to remove the capacity of Germany and France to fight a war by placing the two raw materials of arms in a political "collective"
Naldo, Clarinda's comparison was with regard to mass control and domination of people and that's what happened in the early 1900s.
Naldo, if we can invade countries for no reason other than at the behest of the US (although we're continually told it's to protect our own security), the I believe anything can happen because now the majority of the people here are well under control.
Can you imagine we would have stayed in Iraq if over 10 million had taken to the streets rather than the few million who were wide awake enough to see the light?
No the EU wants complete control and only Ireland can now stop that happening, although if they do vote No then the EU will think up a reason to continue to socially engineer Europe.
yes SubR, because we have always had the strategic position of standing on the periphery of Europe, shouting and hectoring but losing the chance of actually controlling the direction of the Juggernaut.
We always hoped and expected it would fail en route but it has not and we have lost the chance to direct where it is going.
Simples right enough Bugger Lugs, but we also thought the EU couldn't manage without us. Nobody in government was astute enough to see Germany and France take over the driving.
Westminster has lost the plot for at least 60, possibly 100 years..
Therein lies the problem, the Unionists still haven't twigged that yet and see Britannia as being a real World Player.
Drop the pretence, refocus on our people, redefine our defence strategy in terms of our shores and our people's interests, not those of politicians strutting the World stage with bare ersed breeks generate and distribute some wealth.

Let us hope so, but will it happen?
Well Howard we can give it our best shot. I'm trying to post something about it every few days.
I will follow with interest. I am keen to know your thoughts. I need to get up to speed on this.

Are Labour planning on introducing a last-minute Calman Bill at Westminster, right at the death throes of this government?!?
Call Me Dave ("no constitutional change in the next parliament") will be absolutely delighted. ;)
This'll be fun!! :D

It's close at present.
Wow Stuart, thanks for that. I'll have to do a wee post to bring it to folks' attention I think don't you?
I never read teletext so completely missed it.
You are welcome to show my "No" flag!

That's why I suppose the No to the Lisbon Treaty.
Fair do's, Subrosa.

Naldo have a visit to Derek's blog, he's a Euro-sceptic. He writes from that perspective but it's interesting.

Ty OR I'll take you up on that.
Clarinda, as eloquent as ever and I concur. Naldo may gain a little from your post, I do hope so.

Resulting in Germany and France being the main players in the EU Bugger Lugs.

Typical "Rule Britannia" mentality SubR.
