Afghanistan - Toll Rises to 201

Another soldier has been killed in Sangin, Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was part of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and was killed on Saturday.

I understand Gordon Brown voiced his condolences this morning but insisted we must stay in this war and fight.

Why do I think this is becoming more and more like Vietnam every day? Defence of the Realm posts about Sangin here.

May his family be surrounded by understanding and caring friends who will see them through the hell of grief.

It seems to be that men are being asked to die for no justifiable reason. I actually dont know why we are in Afghanistan.

Because we don't want to lose our place at the UN Council table CB. Then we'd lose the status of being a 'super-power'. Some super-power we are when we're controlled by the US.

Sadly many hese heroes have died because of lack of MOD suppor. My tirbure to the soldiers and mockery of Ainsworth.

Also you must see the awesome video GOT has made. It will make you cry.

The total Afghanistan toll of the coallition forces has now reached 1,312. The US has lost almost 800. I cannot find the current number of Afghanistan forces killed nor the number of civilians. Add in the numbers of Taliban/insurgents and the toll must be in the tens of thousands.

Russian losses in the 80s reached 16,000 which is considered to be a very conservative figure with an estimated 1 million dead (mujhadeene, civilians and other forces).

So in the last 29 years Afghanistan has seen possibly 2 million dead and 3-4 million injured and the entire nation traumatised - again.

The tragic cost to the millions of families affected cannot be measured.

It's very difficult to get accurate numbers Clarinda, although DotR tries to pull it all together.

It's my belief that the Russian figure wasn't far short of 1m because many would were seriously injured died later but they were never accounted as fallen.

I still don't quite understand the mentality of the Afghans. Watching a bit on BBC earlier, women and children sit in isolated mountain areas starving to death. They are totally poverty stricken and completely ignorant of further than what their eyes can see. Is it religion that dumbs their sense of survival or desire to look for a better life?

And so it will go - year after year - for what? A pipeline. So some corporation can deliver oil from Azerbaijan and gas from Turkmenistan?

It seems so scunnert. Of course Britain must be seen to be a world power, hence the sacrifice of our troops. Oh how I hope the country votes these killers out of office.
