Afghanistan - Toll now 200

The 200th sacrifice of one of our soldiers has happened today in Selly Oak hospital, Birmingham. The soldier, believed to be part of the team from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, was seriously injured in Helmand province on Thursday. The other three members of the team were killed outright.

This brings the death toll of those killed in action to 200.

According to Sky News, Bob Ainsworth has issued the usual platitudes and also said leaving was not an option.

May this young man's family know that there are many in this country who sympathise with them in their loss.

and, if we hang about for forty years, how many will that make it?
The only people who can sort Afganistan is the people who live there, remind me again what happened in Veitnam? And now we're good trading partners?

Ok, I admit it it's me I'm a tumchie and don't understand.

You're no tumchie Dram but of course the government would like us all to believe we were.

The death toll will just get higher and higher as we're cannon fodder in the position we're in. It won't get better.

Afghanistan isn't worth the life of one Scots soldier.

Ive just watched Jobsworth on the Marr show.

No need for anyone to feel like a tumchie, Ainsworth fills that roll better than anyone.

I wonder if anyone will pick up on the fact that he said that the UK military could not handle two supply chains at one time, and things in Afganistan will improve now we are out of Iraq.

Begs the question why did we get involved in Afganistan if we knew before we went in we could not properly supply the troops. I suppose we would need proper reporters to ask that type of hard question. No chance of that on the BBC.

Lions led by donkeys indeed.

I'm off to watch it on iPlayer now Dubbie. In some ways I feel sorry for the man because he's been appointed well above his abilities but then he shouldn't have accepted the job should he?

That's what makes him a jobsworth in my eyes.
