Scottish Passport Renewals Referred to Other Countries

Here's a scenario for you.

You live in Scotland. The family are to go abroad for their holidays in a couple of weeks time but you discover your daughter's passport is just out of date. You contact the only passport office left in Scotland which is based in Glasgow and ask for help. You know that renewing the passport requires your daughter to attend for an interview as this is according to new rules passed last year. The Glasgow office say they can't help you because they're too busy so you are told you will have to contact your nearest office which is Durham or Belfast.

Rather silly suggesting Belfast as to fly there your daughter would require a passport, so you contact Durham, who offer you an interview the day before you fly off to sunnier lands.

Out of interest you phone Glasgow again and ask why they're so busy because the reason given for closing down other offices in Scotland was that there was a fall in demand. You're flabbergasted to hear Glasgow are too busy dealing with postal applications from England to attend to you so you contact your MSP and explain your frustration. When she intervenes you're suddenly offered an interview appointment, at the Glasgow office, for the end of the week.

Astonishing story isn't it? This is exactly what happened to David McLeish from Stewarton in Ayrshire. Sandra White, Mr McLeish's MSP said, "Applications from Scotland should have priority at our country's only passport office. It's another erosion of the service in Scotland. It's not little better than second rate compared to the rest of the UK."

Until last year's cuts 284 people were employed at Glasgow. The job losses were part of a 'restructuring exercise' the IPS said was necessary due to falling demand. Glasgow would no longer handle postal applications but the counter service would remain unaffected.

An IPS spokesman confirmed Glasgow had been asked to help process postal applications. He confirmed Scots customers were being offered appointment in other offices, but not because of postal applications. If postal applications were not the reason what was?

I suggest this is an issue the Scottish government should investigate and make the necessary complaints to the IPS. Why should Scots have to travel to another country to renew their passports? Why do we allow ourselves to be insulted to this degree? Gordon Brown's government is responsible for making these cuts. We must ensure he pays at the ballot box.

Pay he will. Rosy, Pay he will. But he is so insane that he doesn't actually believe there will have to be an election. We may have to take to the streets. Much as I loathe him I don't actually wish any personal harm on him, I think he needs psychiatric care.

We mustn't take to the streets Jim. If we did then he can call a national emergency thus keeping himself in No 10 forever.

I think it's a national emergency it's called, but you know what I mean. It was just a few months ago Westminster were headlining that the police were all being trained in mass protest control just in case we all trot out waving banners.

In my case I'd happily wave a claymore if I had one and I could rustle up a targe if given a few days.

Exactly what kind of muppet books a holiday without checking their passport expiry dates, and what the relevant requirements are at their destination?

Think of it as evolution in action. (Almost.)

SR,

You think I'm going to sit back and watch him call a National Emergency?

I predict a riot and it will be the Armed Forces carrying it out in Downing Street to get rid of that illegitimate c*nt.

Democracy my arse, you want it you have to take it.....

Sweet dreams!

Baron, we don't have our own passports. Our passports state we are Britsh citizens (I'm quite sure others will be more specific but I don't have the time at present).

So the UK control Scottish passports and expect Scottish holders to go to England or Ireland to hav them renewed.

No comments from those who decry people like me who try hard to protect Scottish identity isn't it?

Oh I do hope so CD, it's my greatest wish that the military, who are being used as cannon fodder to suit the agendas of polticians are publically held to question.

Let's not play into the hands of Gordon Brown though - that's his greatest wish. Then he can stay forever in No 10.

sm753, so you've never been a muppet? I refuse to believe that unless you're over 20.

Also you obviously don't have a family for whom you do the administration.

Many folk can see themselves in this situation - bar you of course.

Where is SU? I would have though he/she would have jumped on this post from a great height calling me racist.

Auch he/her standards aren't what I thought.

History will tell you, Canadians have protected Brits not the other way around as they make it sound....or have you believe.

SR,

I watched the Wind that shakes the barley yesterday and it was a powerful film of how the British Crown subjugated the Irish. Exactly as the Scots are and have been for over 300 years.......waiting for the bites lol!

But it's true in some aspects, great link by the way about sucking in foreign wealth into Whitehall....so many things to think about, so much frustration, and patience is running low lol!

Can't wait for next year, those down south in Westmidden are going to get it up them!

Sunny here, lots to do though!

Morning CD, haven't seen that film. Will keep a look out for it.

Cool here and overcast. Not in the least like summer.

Ach - same old same old secind class citizens. Why do some Scots think this kind of treatment os okay? I'm amazed they haven't closed down the internet in Scotland yet - due to lack of demand of course.

There was little protest when it happened scunnert although I think the staff did their best to bring it to the public's attention.

We really have to waken up to the likes of these moves.
