Sarah Palin has resigned and is handing over the running of Alaska to her deputy. Toby Harden, the Telegraph's US reporter, can't understand why and nor can I after reading her resignation speech, especially since there are still 16 months of her governorship to go.
My feeling is that the US election was too much for her but I may well be wrong. She's a tough woman by all accounts.
So, don't be surprised if she does put herself forward in the next race to the White House. Forward planning and all that ...

She will move to Seattle or somewhere in the east to build up influence for later.
She is thick as mince, even worse than Bush and a religious nutter too.
She may be thick Billy, but she's got the hang of political life.
Who said you had to be intelligent to be a politician these days in the US? Or anywhere for that matter.
Duh?
The beat reason i read for Palin ducking out of office now is.
"This is going to be a pretty tough time for incumbents the next couple of years in America with everything going to hell, and this may be a pretty good time not to be in office,"
spot on and like all right wing mentalist neo-con Republicans she hasn't got the Decency to see through her elected term.
The Republicans deserve candidate Palin the rest of the world do not.
We've not seen the last of her...
California is bust!
Alaska?
Duh to you too Billy ;)
I think you may well be right JPT, she enjoys the limelight too much to stay out of it.
I hope people remember she didn't even do her full term as governor Niko.
Subrosa
With respect to the American peoples they do seem to problems with their memory of past events and individuals roles therein.
Mind so do the peoples of the United Kingdom...Duh!
Aye Niko, nobody's without their bad politicians.
My American friend thinks that she needs to spend time in what are more important states now, gathering friends, raising money and doing favours, so that she can call them in later.
According to him, she has been spending a lot of time out of Alaska, and this has garnered a great deal of criticism from Alaskans. Alaska is so far away from what's happening in the US that she simply can't stay there. She has to be in the lower 48. (Hawaii also is too far out of the way to matter).
Well, that's Danny's take on it anyway. As he says, she also needs to learn stuff, Bush proved you can be thick and be president, but not THAT thick. She could, however, be very popular with what is left of the Republican Party... ie, very right wing and very religious. And bit by bit other people who might have been up for 2012 are getting ruled out (the latest being the governor of one of the southern states [can't remember which] who has taken a lover in Argentina).
His words, not mine. I have no idea, but Danny knows a thing or two about American politics.
seems like she probably didn't want people to spend much time thinking about this since she announced it the Friday before July 4th
A case of a good day to bury bad news then hookah.
Thanks for that tris, it makes sense, although not completing her stint as Governor isn't a good move. Then maybe that's not important in US politics.
It may be Subrosa, that it is marginally better than completing it but having really bad publicity because she is always away in the lower 48 contiguous states(in particular in the big states with big GOP money).
One of the criticisms of her last year was that she lacked any kind of real government experience, having been the mayor of a town with 900 people, and the a state governor for a couple of years, but in a state with more moose than people.... I agree that giving up on it suggests that she is a quitter, and leaves her with not much more administrative experience than before.
It's a puzzle. I'll keep you abreast of any further information that Danny sends me.
Her speech confused me tris. No real explanation in it at all, in fact it's contradictory often.
I'd appreciate hearing further information from you. Many thanks.
LOL SR. The woman is incapable of contructing a sentence in English. I'm not surprised that you had difficulty in understanding her.
I did try though tris, I read it 3 times.
