Labour Grassroots Losing Faith in Gordon Brown

The Labour Party's grassroots is losing patience with Gordon Brown over his handling of the MPs' expenses crisis.  About 100 labour parliamentary candidates, councillors and local activists have signed an online petition which accuses the Prime Minister of being 'negligent' in failing to act decisively against MPs who have made excessive claims for their allowances.

A separate survey of 780 labour members and supporters found that 62% want Mr Brown to stand down as party leader before the general election, according to the poll by the LabourList website.

Last night Mr Brown promised tough disciplinary action against MPs who have made excessive expenses claims and he suggested that MPs should no longer decide and police their own pay and allowances, which would be handed to an independent body.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Gordon Brown made that same statement a few times recently?  Where is the action?

Why the photograph of Tony McNulty outside the House of Commons yesterday you may ask.  I couldn't resist it. This is the man who is responsible for the 2.2 million unemployed people in the UK and he's also under fire over his own expenses claims.

Gordon Brown's handling of this crisis has been lamentable so it's not surprising Labour's grass roots supporters are losing confidence in him. A lot of them are probably fairly old labour thinking, we were promised a return to more old labour ways by GB. But instead got more New Labour ways and an absolute mountain of sleaze, and GB has turned into the Ditherer in Chief.

Great photo, I wonder how many other MP's have taken up smoking recently- is that chargeable on the ACA? As in do I smoke more when in my second home? And is that smoking wholly necessary for the “performance” of my Parliamentary duties?

............

You see this is the problem with Labour, they always look to one person for the blame when it is the whole party that is the problem.

Its funny, Labourlist has got some cred back ,now that Drapper has left..Now we might see a bit more truth.

Intersting speculation at PoliticalBetting that if Martin goes he'll take Brown with him. Very plausible.

You're right SR - Brown's just regurgitating the same old lines and announcing already-announced reviews and policies as before - pretty much the same old trick he and all his Ministers have been using for years. At least Joe Public has noticed at last and it doesn't wash any more.

Aye it is a good photo Monty. Speaks for itself really.

Spook, Gordon Brown won't clean out the labour party. It will stay the same until the younger generation get in. Hope they sweep it from top to bottom.

Now that's a good caption CB, wish I'd thought of it :)

I had a quick read late last night Vronsky. It seems Brown has to sign Martin's P45 if he allows this vote of no confidence today. Will go and have another look.

Morning Howard, wonder what today will bring. Little in the news except the chaos at Westminster.

subrosa,

It seems Gordon can't get rid of Martin even if he wanted to - it has to be voted on by MPs.

Incidentally, if you get an e-mail from the Department of Health telling you to avoid tinned pork because of the Swine Flu, just ignore it - it's SPAM.

Events are moving quicker than I can type brownlie :)

I like Spam, I happen to have a tin in the fridge :o
