The Herald is reporting the SNP have dropped their plans to offer the private sector long term leases on 25% of Scotland's forests.
Environmental Minister Roseanna Cunningham today wrote to members of Holyrood's Rurual Affairs Committee to state that the leasing proposal has been ruled out by ministers. The leasing plan was part of the climate change Bill.
I've previously posted on this subject and most of the commenters were against the idea and some couldn't understand why, when we have a public body such as the Forestry Commission into which £x million is ploughed annually, the Forestry Commission cannot reorganise and undertake the work the private sector were willing to do. If we don't have staff qualified to manage these advances then let's shake up the FC and employ staff who have the required qualifications and abilities. The government's public consultation showed similar concerns.
A sensible decision from Roseanna Cunningham and one which will be applauded all over Scotland.

A sensible move for sure.
Indeed polaris and she hasn't hung around has she? I'm sure she received thousands of emails saying it was wrong and they'd lose many votes. I emailed and had a pleasant reply last week which made me think the attitude was changing.
Have you noticed that niko's blog has gone? I don't know if its temporary or even if it is a great loss to the blogosphere, but I'm concerned.
"Blog has been removed. Sorry, the blog at nikostratosii.blogspot.com has been removed."
At least the SNP respond quickly to pubic dissent, something +ve.
No polaris I haven't noticed. Think last time I was in his blog was last night telling him he had the wrong photo up for a post on Fred Goodwin (the photo was George Matheson).
I wonder if Spook or someone has his email, I'll enquire.
Yes it's it a breath of fresh air to have a government who listens instead of dictates.
@ SU - why yellow poop - am I being dense?
Oh yeah - right your that really clever doppelganger that posts porn. How wonderfully clever - you must be so pleased with yourself, and the family? - how proud you must make them. What would the NAT cause do without clever campaigners like you?
Now go back to your box and let the adults talk...
Sorry Rosa, just dealing with the Children. Guess I deserve a bit of a backlash after my rant yesterday - even my Dad gave me a hard time.
Sorry
Polaris, no need to apologise, I didn't see his posts until I read yours on my reader. Sorry if he upset you. Can I ban a poster without all the security palaver? Don't think so. I'll keep a closer eye if I can.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
To be honest i thought this was a good idea to rent out part of the forrests as it would have brought in more investment, anyway i think in the main most people will agree with the SNP,s move..
Clara i nver saw the posts but i gather they were from the fake Scottish Unionist ? Please dont fall into the trap and think he is in anyway a Nat, beleive me he posts on the Scotsman forums and he aint a Nat BTW, i dont know what he is but hell he aint a Nat..
Spook you surprise me about your view on this. Do you really think, when we have a quango into which we pump millions, that we should rent out our forests so as these 'experts' in the said quango can sit back and relax as they've been doing for the past 10 years?
I have a dear friend who was a heid bummer in the FCS (he's been retired 20+ years now) and this has distressed him greatly. He's a staunch SNP supporter and was a national council delegate etc until recently (he now feels travelling is too much), so he's able to reach the people who matter. Believe me, he didn't mince his words about this.
He feels the FSC should be cleared out, too many in it these days who have no vision for Scotland. I won't go on because this will become a rant on his behalf.
You have a point, lol i must try better and shake of this privetise mantra of mine.
Spook, here's a wee mantra. 'Do I want more of my country to be owned by foreigners'. I know I'll be pilloried by the lefties but what the hell.
"Potty mouth" posts detritus on my blog too.
Then deletes the posts.
The evidence points towards tertiary education.
Wot? No WV required?
Wise - very wise. Well done SNP.
FT, I've taken WV off because it was causing problems. It can be easily put on if necessary.
