GORDON BROWN INSULTS VETERANS AGAIN

Recently various newspapers have reported Gordon Brown and the MOD's refusal to attend the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy this summer.  Since last October the Veterans Association have been in talks with ministers about the event and some help with funding, but were constantly refused any assistance and told that MOD policy only gives official backing to the 25th, 50th, 60th and 100th anniversaries of major military events, therefore no arrangements would be made for royal or government representation at the 65th on 6 June. The Association is looking to raise £500,000 for the 500 members who are still fit enough to travel.  This week the Daily Mail decided to start a campaign to raise the sum required and they did so with their usual gusto.

'On Wednesday morning, there had been 'no plans' for any ministers, let alone Mr Brown, to go to Normandy.

By Wednesday evening, invitations were 'being considered'. By yesterday morning, however, the official line was that no invitations had been received. Then, last night, Mr Brown signalled that he may attend in person.'

Today there's been a remarkable U-turn from Gordon Brown and his government.  Although the Mail takes the credit, they know full well the reason for this change of 'heart'.  Yesterday it was reported that President Barack Obama will represent the US at the major international gathering.

'The Prime Minister's spokesman said: 'If it were decided by the organisers that heads of government should be there, then the Prime Minister would be very pleased to be there.'

Of course it's excellent news that these veterans will now be given the respect they deserve but doesn't this show the shallow qualities of our Prime Minister - no respect for the UK military but desperate to be seen in the company of the US President and other heads of state who may well attend.  Actually it shows he has no respect for any UK citizen and he is only concerned with being in power, but we all knew that didn't we.  So much for his platitudes about 'feeling the pain' of those who are suffering from his actions in the past 12 years.

Royalty were also criticised for not attending but Palace insiders indicated that senior Royals would be 'very interested' in attending, but protocol rules meant this would depend on receiving an invitation from the British government.

So a good result for our veterans and a thank you to Rod Stewart who had already donated £7500 to the campaign before this U-turn.  The Veterans Association was insulted with the initial refusal by the government to give them any help and now they must feel insulted that it's not them or their cause that matters to the Prime Minister, but the PM's obsessive desire to be photographed with Barack Obama which has effected his change of 'heart'.

One for Rosa, again.

Ok an extreme perspective but I for one think we need to storm the barricades of Westminster..

Holyrood would so much easier to monitor and control.

I like the idea of limiting tenure at Holyrood to 2 or 3 maximum parliaments.

Then with absolute open surveillance of all laws passed and the Pigs with no right to vote their own salaries and retirement packages.

Can of worms I think?

I saw that on Old Holborn's blog Faux Cul. I think I'll nick it as it's very appropriate to UK as well.

Certainly agree with you.

subrosa,

If this is true it a very sad reflection on Brown and his government but it is hardly a major surprise to anyone.

Yes it is true Brownlie, I've read bits in the past months about the MOD's refusal to help in any way. Just so happened the Mail got their hands on it and ran with it.

Although, as I say, it was because Obama's going that the sad man has changed his mind.
