ADVERTISING SEX

There is much talk this week, in female circles anyway, about the advertising watchdog's decision to change the rules and allow abortion clinics and perhaps condom manufacturers to advertise on television in an attempt, they say, to reduce teenage pregnancies.

This is as much a political decision as it is a business one, the political one being that television desperately needs financial help because advertisers, as well as curtailing their spending, are finding television no longer gives value for money.  We the viewers just aren't paying much attention these days, that is if we even bother to watch at all. Can the Westminster government allow TV channels such as ITV and Channel 4 to collapse?

The business decision is a good one because there's money in sex and there's money in the fallout of sex.  Why this decision wasn't taken some years ago I'll never know because it's not as if condoms and abortion are unknown words or are never uttered. Television has been showing sex in its various forms for many years, whether it's in the weekly soaps or a risque film.

My hope is that reputable businesses like the Marie Stopes Clinics will be sensitive in their approach and that advertisers of condoms mention sexual health issues like the continuing rise in sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia, which can so easily destroy a young woman's productive system. Of course there will be the objectors such as the pro-life lobby, religious groups and those who are offended at any mention of the word sex, but I think most men and women are capable of making their own decisions.

I'm in the "it's a woman's right to choose" group and I still firmly believe that, but also accept with that right comes responsibility. Men must also be responsible and they are often the forgotten half of the argument.

Back in the 60s when the Pill was discovered women thought they were liberated.  Who would have thought that some of today's young women, or girls really, would rather depend on a morning after pill because they won't accept responsibility for their own actions, or could it be today's society encourages irresponsibility by providing everything from a home to an 'income' for pregnant teenagers?  These young girls can't use the excuse of ignorance any longer.  Millions of pounds are ploughed into sex education.  Yes I know, that's another debate.

Exactly Niko and I'm with your mum on this. Still I believe the advertising is a good thing because I'm sick of hearing 'I never thought it would happen to me' or 'I wanted a baby to love'. If they think that then let them pay for it and not us.

I don't know enough about sex to comment on this subject but FC's comments should be interesting.

Scunnert, I knew about the estrogen problem as it's monitored in the rivers around here but I had no idea of the foetal material clinics. Actually I still feel nauseous after reading it. Much tighter control must be taken. Thanks for the links.

Just checking in to say thanks for your visit.

But like the AIDS ad campaign said in the 80s sex is ok if you wear a condom this one will say sex is ok because abortions are easy, pain-free. I don't honestly believe that they are.

Hello John, good of you to visit. You're right, abortions can be pain free physically but leave painful mental scars for a lifetime.

2nd thoughts.

This campaign is actually contra-condoms.

It's saying if you don't collect the text offering the morning after pill (a different campaign I heard of) you can always get an abortion.

So you can bareback as much as you want.

May return soon..fuckety fuck. said...

the problem, as i see it, is that everyone thinks that girls are inorant of sex and its outcome..of course they arnt! they know where babies come from..the problem is that a lot of young girls see being a mother as a valid career option. surely this is a problem with a girl's confidence and drive..this should be tackled more than sex education.

Brownlie somehow I didn't think you would. It's something to do with a golf I'm sure.

Very true Baron but many of today's youngsters think they're one and the same.

Old bag, you're of the same mind as me but we're shouted down by the liberals.

Stop giving these lassies houses would be a start.

Oh, I hope so. I hope they all collapse. Might mean more shagging, mind you.

subrosa,

Not nice to think that while you're doing your best your partners thinking "Sod the earth moving, I'll get a house, maternity allowance, child benefit etc etc out of this!

Of course not Brownlie, but how many males would think that? Few in my life have ever spoken of their social responsibility and that's been before the ration oops - passion.
