Congratulations to Iain on his well deserved election to the post of Rector of Edinburgh University. Iain is one of the best commentators on Scottish politics, writes frequently for the Guardian and is a columnist for the Herald and the Sunday Herald.
He was running against George Foulkes, the Scottish MSP and member of the House of Lords. The third candidate, George Galloway, withdrew early in the race owing to unexpected work commitments, but he asked his supporters to redirect their support to Iain.
As an Edinburgh politics graduate, he is the 50th rector; the post was set up in 1859 and first held by Gladstone.
I'm sure he will be an outstanding Rector and I wish him every success. The better man won by a good few miles.

a little reminder of how sad you are that the lost the rectorial election...something he must be getting used to
subrosa,
I seem to recall that this attracted numerous comments on Spook's blog when he first posted on the rectorship.
Trust you to back a winner. Who do you fancy in the Kilmarnock V Hibs game tomorrow?
Poor George, he'll be crying all the way to the bank. I'm not vindictive but I hope his team lose tomorrow as well.
Well done, Iain, by far the best choice!
Brownlie, the last post I did on it was about the 'tricks' Georgy Porgy was undertaking. I'm mad because I should have put a tenner on Iain but I've never been in a bookies in my life!
Hibs to win of course. Happy now?
Monty I'm a wee bit lost about the meaning of your comment. Can you explain it a wee bit more please?
subrosa,
Never been in a bookies? When I was a student I used to work nights in a casino. I was kicked out of the Labour party for taking money from the rich instead of the poor - which was completely against Labour policies!!! Some things never change.
Ah well then brownlie, you'll be a good poker player.
Labour, like all parties, has always looked after themselves, labour more than most of course, because they thought they had eternal power over Scotland.
