Meet the President of Europe

Herman Van Rompuy is the first President of the European Union which, with the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon by all the 27 EU member states in early November, was transformed into a genuine United States of Europe, state the Brussels Journal.

In order to understand Mr Van Rompuy, the article has a brief history of Belgium - an artificial state constructed by the international powers in 1830 as a political compromise and experiment.

Belgians do not like their state. They despise it. They say it represents nothing. There are no Belgian patriots, because no-one is willing to die for a flag which does not represent anything. Because Belgium represents nothing, multicultural ideologues love Belgium. They say that without patriotism, there would be no wars and the world would be a better place. As John Lennon sang “Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.”

In this position he had to prevent Parliament, and the Flemish representatives there, from voting a bill to split BHV. He succeeded in this, by using all kinds of tricks. One day he even had the locks of the plenary meeting room changed so that Parliament could not convene to vote on the issue. On another occasion, he did not show up in his office for a whole week to avoid opening a letter demanding him to table the matter. His tactics worked.

Meet Our New Masters

On the left is Herman Van Rompuy the new President of the EU and the right, puckering up, is Baroness Ashton, Europe's first 'foreign secretary'.

Herman Van Rompuy is the Belgian prime minister who favours the introduction of EU-wide taxes and the abolition of national flags and anthems. He had been hot favourite to win the job since Tony Blair's bid crumbled in recent days.

Lady Ashton, who only eight years ago was head of Hertfordshire Health Authority, has never been elected in her life, yet she now holds one of the world's most powerful positions. She will also be in charge of thousands of staff and have the run of a grace-and-favour home in Brussels.

Lady Ashton helped steer the Lisbon Treaty, which has created her new job, through Parliament without a referendum as Labour leader in the House of Lords. Since then she has had an unimpressive spell as EU trade commissioner.

Mr Brown last night welcomed Lady Ashton's appointment as High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy. The Prime Minister said she would also hold the vice-presidency of the European Commission.

"It gives Britain a powerful voice both within the council and the commission," he said. "It will ensure that Britain's voice is very loud and clear."

Lady Ashton will head up a 5,000 strong EU diplomatic service with 120 embassies around the globe and have a say in the allocation of the bloc's £6.5 billion foreign aid budget.

Changing Tune (or should that be Tone)

It's a far cry from nearly two years ago, when it was reported that Tony Blair had been holding discussions with some of his best mates about the prestigious new job as President of Europe, to this.

Seems like Mr Blair already has his 'damage limitation plans' in place and he will insist he never mounted a campaign to become the European Union's first full-time president.

Blair's former chief-of-staff in No 10, Jonathan Powell, was sent to test the support in Europe and to covertly lobby Mr Blair's name to be among the leading contenders, but he came back disappointed.

The news from Brussels is that a centre-right candidate from one of the smaller EU member states will be given the presidency to ensure it becomes a ceremonial position rather than a high profile position capable of influencing policy.

A summit is being organised by the EU for mid-November when the name of the new president is expected to be announced. Any excuse for a jamboree at our expense.

I wonder if Tony will attend. It hasn't been a good week for him after all. Firstly Tesco didn't want him and now the EU have unceremoniously shoved him aside. These rejections aren't going to do much for his property portfolio are they?

Beguiling Blair

This is the man who sent our fathers, mothers, sons and daughters to war on a lie. His lie - and he has no regrets.

Now he's been lecturing Roman Catholics at a conference in Rimini, Italy where he told people of all faiths around the world that their own conflicts and decisions "allow aggressive secularism in part of the West to gain traction" when the faiths should be united in standing up for justice and solidarity.

"This is surely the role of faith in modern times. To do what it alone can do. To achieve what neither a person, nor a state nor a community, on their own or even together, can achieve."

What does that mean? I'm sure some of you will understand it and will be kind enough to explain.

Blair stopped off in Rimini to grace it with his presence during his family summer holiday in the Mediterranean where he is a guest on Rising Sun, the five-deck yacht of American software billionaire Larry Ellison.

The pace of modern life and the restless search for short-term material gain in a globalised economic system constitute a threat both to the planet and to human identity,

He of all people should know about short term material gain. This man is now selling religion to earn his millions and I'm always suspect of those who do. Mind you, if all else fails he can buy his own American TV channel and preach to the vulnerable and needy on a daily basis. He's certainly not camera shy.

His final comment to the conference was:

Ever since I began preparations to become a Catholic, I felt I was coming home; and this is now where my heart is, where I know I belong," he said.

I know where you belong too Mr Blair and it's certainly not as President of the EU.

Can Someone Enlighten Me Please

I've been rather confused the past couple of days. Nothing unusual some of my regular readers may think and I can't condemn them, but I should think many would be confused with these two headlines this week.

First there is this report that Gordon Brown 'could be the EU's first president', then a day later comes another article 'David Cameron would not oppose Blair becoming first president of the EU'.

Which article is true or are both an attempt to promote their own preference? France's Sarkozy seems to be making more mischief but that's his forte, changing his mind to impress his latest best friend. I strongly feel neither man should be president of the EU and although my reasons are far too numerous to list here, they are possibly in line with the majority of the population.
