Poll Result 'Should School Holidays Be Reduced'

The result of the 'Should School Holidays Be Reduced' poll doesn't show any real enthusiasm for fewer school holidays, with only slightly over half deciding it would be a good idea.

Is that because our children are now grown up and school holidays don't affect us (unless we're caring for grandchildren during holidays)?  Maybe there are other reasons.

Thanks to all 157 of you who voted.

How can they consider reducing School Holidays, when there's all those buildings to be maintained & upgraded.

The contractors & their operatives & 'technicians' have so many 'Elf+Safety' aspects to consider; and, Risk Assessments to be carried out.

Blimey, some Head Teachers won't even allow their fragile little responsibilities to play Conkers, climb trees or play Hide-n-Seek without full Personal Protection Equipment, and, no strangers within 1/2 mile. Imagine the risk when there are workmen (OK, work-people) around.

[Yeah, I exaggerated about the Hide-n-Seek. I think.]

Wouldn't have anything to do with reports of abysmal education standards when reportedly even University graduates when applying for jobs are incapable of writing a simple report without aid of a computer.

Finland has possibly the best education system in the world.

It has a short school day and long school holidays.

We should shorten the school day and lengthen the school holidays.

Aye.

I voted on the basis that if I was a kid I'd want more holidays. This also fits with the kind of education system I'd have if I was in charge of an Independent Scotland - which as you'd well imagine would probably be a bad idea. (Although I think its a splendid idea which I'd be happy to share with Mike Russell should he come asking...)

You think during all holidays maintenance is carried out Joe? Never was in my school. The place was usually closed.

Surely if there were longer holidays parts of schools could be used for the communities.

Don't get me started Apogee. :)

It's the standard of education right enough Aangirfan.

Pa_broon, as I said to Aangirfan it's not to do with the length of time children attend school, but what is done when they are there. Our standards are falling and we're failing our children.
