FREE FOOD PREPARATION for our ELDERLY

No council in Scotland will be able to charge pensioners for help with food preparation thanks to regulations to be laid before the Scottish Parliament.

Following Lord Sutherland's Independent Review of Free Personal and Nursing Care last year, the Scottish Government agreed that the existing legislation on food preparation lacked clarity. Working with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), these regulations will clearly outlaw charging for food preparation.

Separate regulations brought forward by the Scottish Government will increase free personal and nursing care payments in line with inflation.

If passed by Parliament, weekly payments to eligible residents in care homes will increase from April from £149 to £153 per week for personal care, with weekly nursing care payments rising from £67 to £69.

No pensioner should be penalised because of where they live. This new legislation will be most welcome.

Having seen how the elderly are not cared for in this society.
Irrespective of nation, political party, ethnicity etc.

I have decided after much thought that when i am unable to look after myself.

And without anyone's help to end my life as the alternative is too awful
to endure.

I have an understanding with my family niko. It has been well discussed and agreed.

Wife gone in for her op yet?

Nikos and subrosa, old chums,

Let's hope and pray it does not come to having to make such an awful decision.

On a much lighter note, who eats cream crackers with their soup?

WV is mortax - sign of the times.

Cream crackers and soup? Not here. Home made wholemeal here and sometimes even with a scrape of Benecol spread!

I prefer cornish wafers anyway :)

Niko, I don't believe it - or maybe I do.

Our older generation should be looked after better. This is just a small but welcomed step.

All the elderly should have a steady supply of free delicious sandwiches, I say.

Thanks, calicolyst, mines a chicken, bacon and mayonnaise.

What are the rest of you having?

Mine's a salad varying between with avocado and smoked salmon please. Thanks calicolyst.

In fact that's not such a silly idea because some elderly don't want big meals so could have 2 - 4 small ones out of a sandwich.

The loss of regular meals on wheels was the beginning of nutrional worries for the elderly.

Ah niko, both the laddies are fine. I'm sure Spook's granny couldn't have cared less who took her shopping as long as she got her rations stacked in the cupboards.

You see, what I like about the SNP, as an ex Labour voter and an Englishman, is that they are targeting their resources in an intelligent, non-politically correct way.

I remember that they committed to free school meals for all children. That impressed me. I remember that they helped the fishing industry during the fuel crisis.

As the Westminster Government carries on it's policy of strangling the Scottish Government's plans, such as scrapping Council Tax, my guess is Scottish people will realise how shabby Gordon Brown is being.

This little initiative is aimed well and will be of real help to the elderly, who are increasingly being seen as irrelevant in wider society.

The SNP have a broad membership WW, from fairly far right to mid-left wing and like you, I think they're doing a good balancing act. Not an easy task to keep everyone reasonably happy.

WW I don't think the fact you're English has anything to do with your political stance in Scotland, then again perhaps it's quite the opposite, as there is no party in England with such policies and support.

Unfortunately it seems labour's mishandling of the UK is causing some to turn to the BNP in England and that's not a good sign. Will be interesting to see the results of the European elections in June.
