Another Life Lost

Another British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan.

He was killed on Tuesday ‘as a result of an explosion during a vehicle-borne suicide attack’.

The soldier, from the 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment, was described as ‘a hugely experienced soldier who commanded great respect throughout his regiment.’

Each and every one of our armed forces deserves respect.

446 of our service personnel have been killed in this unnecessary and unwinnable war.

RIP.

“We Will Remember Them”

… when, Oh when will all the killing end.

As an aside, - can I draw your attention to “Return of a King” by William Dalrymple, recently shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction.
The parallels between the events of 1840 and now are quite, quite frightening.
Those who should have, obviously never did learn from the mistakes of history. So now we see history repeating herself before our very eyes and with deadly consequence.

Thank you for telling me about the book JRB. I will phone my library and ask them to order it for me.

I am reminded of a line from an Eric Bogle song "Do all those who lie here know why they died?" because it has never been adequately explained why all these young people are dying in Afghanistan and why relatives and friends are mourning today.
