For One Day Only
A lump of revered Aberdeen Angus beef and some friends demand my attention today, so it's back to the kitchen for me. The significance of the New Year's Day meal may seem to be fading with the younger generations - as is first footing - but the first meal of the year has always been important to me. A rose-tinted view of 2012? Maybe but it's better to be optimistic today than to consider the alternative.
May 2012 bring hope and peace to all and an end to political conflicts and wars in which thousands are killed needlessly.
Armed conflict should only be when a country is threatened directly or indirectly by invaders. However David Cameron has decided to walk in the steps of Blair and Brown. Nothing will change until people realise these military operations are nothing to do with the safety of the UK and all to do with politicians keeping hidden allegiances with those in the arms and other industries.
I make no apology for including politics in my New Year's Day wishes. Politics control our lives. Nobody can escape them.
I'm escaping for one day only!

Happy new year to you SB, every time I hear of a death in their wars I can not help but feel anger against those who put them in harms way for clandestine motives also sadness for the families of the victim.
Jacobite picks up the theme most eloquently. Today's Independent also re-enforces how blogging is becoming a force for good and against the clandestine forces you and Jacobite touch on. The work goes on but with gaining strength. Long may it last.
One small "beef". Aberdeen Angus is a noble beast indeed but living in Herefordshire, just, I have to support our own!
Happy New Year.
a guid new year sb.steak pie for us.aberdeen angus beef!you dundee folk must be well off.
Happy new year, and enjoy your beef. I'll be enjoying mine (a relief, after all the turkey and seafood).... ;)
We had Romney Marsh lamb, but this days it is no longer necessary to smuggle in the claret or the brandy. There are plenty of local booze runners to provide for our essential needs.
But we do have Laphroig Quarter Cask as ancestral juices to fire up the DNA.
Sorry I'm late in wishing you a happy new year Subrosa.
Happy New Year wee lassie!
Happy New Year Jacobite. Me too. We have a superb military but they're being used poorly.
Happy New Year to Mrs OR and yourself OR.
The beef was excellent but then butcher's meat usually is. I hope you enjoyed your day.
I found out some of my guests were at a steak pie dinner last night hector, hence the change of menu.
Auch aye, Dundee folk are extravagant. Didn't you know? :)
It was lovely Julia and as you say a change from poultry, although I did do some canapes with prawns and smoked salmon. All Scottish produce of course. :)
That sounds lovely Demetrius and lamb is my favourite meat.
I know someone who would be extremely jealous of your tipple. :)
Thanks you JJ. A Happy New Year to you and yours and many of them.
