Another New Government

The conservative Popular Party swept to victory in Spain's general election yesterday. The new prime minister, Mariano Rajoy (pictured with his wife Elvira Fernandez Balbao) witnessed the socialists suffering their biggest defeat since Spain became a democracy more than 30 years ago. He takes over next month.

Little attention has been paid to Catalonia, although the Telegraph reported 'A new party in the Basque country secured several seats in the national parliament'.

In Catalonia the centre-right Catalan Nationalist Coalition (CiU) ousted the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) and the Basque Country's turnout was higher than that of Spain as a whole.

With a conservative government in Madrid and the CiU in Catalonia, the resemblance between the UK and Scotland is obvious. This kindly soul has posted the result details and voices my own opinion too.
