Secret Love

Kathy Kirby was part of my teenage years, along with Lulu, Dusty and Cilla.  We danced to their recordings, copied their hairstyles and attempted to apply the heavy black cake eyeliner and mascara which was part of their public personae.

Like some singers of that era she drifted from the music scene and I assumed she had withdrawn in order to bring up a family.  Sadly that was not the case.

I wonder how many of today's singers could give such a powerful live performance without the aid of modern digital techniques.  Who needed them then when they had one of the wonderful big bands to provide support?

RIP Kathy.

Yup SR, like you I had no idea she ended her life on state benefits either. Pitch-perfect and not many of those around today either! A sad loss and as you say RIP

If she'd had her voice trained she could have gone into the opera circuit WfW. Sad end though and quite an unhappy life altogether.

Isn't it nice to be so young!
Vera Lynn, Ann Shelton and Eve Boswell were the singers of my teenage years! But yes, I do remember Kathy Kirby, unlike today's so-called singers, she could actually sing, not just shout into a microphone.

A "Blast from the Past".

Thanks for the link SR.

"........Lulu, Dusty and Cilla". Also Pet Clark.

I didn't realise that she could actually sing.

When you hear people talking about the '60s girls its usually Cilla and Sandie (who couldn't sing), and Dusty, Petula and Lulu (who could).

It's a pity KK didn't do more, but judging by these two songs, although she had a great voice, they were giving her second rate material. She needed good songs. Even Sandie Shaw had good songs.

I had a fish tea with LULU in Motherwell. She nicked a chip of my plate.

Hi Tris. Sorry I omitted your favourite. :)

Aye Jacobite, certainly makes me aware of my own mortality.

KBW,wow! What a claim to fame. I had a crush on Cliff Richard for a while but never saw him in a recognisable form. My pals and myself could only afford the cheap seats at his Scottish concerts and he was about the size of an ant.

I'm off to Paris in November to see her SR... On the eve of her 79th birthday. Front row seats too. They were ordered about 2 minutes after the tickets went on sale, so guess who'll be doing chorus of "Dans le Temps" with her at the end!!!!

KBW: My mate is a pal of Lulu's son. He works in Oxford where my mae lives; I think he's a chef. Anyway Mac and he are pals.

Hey Tris, that's wonderful. Is she that age? Goodness me, I thought she was younger.

You'll enjoy yourself I'm sure. Remember to do a slideshow and send me a copy.
