what Is An Ally?

On Friday the soldier killed in Afghanistan belonged to the 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment.  Another was killed by an IED yesterday.  He was a member of the 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment and his death increases the number killed in this unwinnable war to 352.

We lost 106 soldiers during the four years they fought the Taliban in Sangin, Helmand province, yet the governor of the province was pleased to tell the US that the British strategy in the province is flawed.  General Dan McNeill (US Army) was said to be 'particularly dismayed by the British effort' and was also highly critical of a ceasefire agreement the British made with local Taliban leaders that allowed British troops to leave the Helmand town of Musa Qala in 2006. "They have made a mess of things in Helmand, their tactics were wrong and the deal that London cut on Musa Qala had failed," he's reported to have said. (The Taliban reclaimed the area within months).

US Marines took over Sangin three months ago.  So far 27 have died and more than 140 have been injured - far worse casualties than those suffered by any British forces in such a short time.  British forces had strung out a series of small patrol bases along route 611 - known as Pharmacy Road - but the Americans closed half of them to 'free up forces to manoeuvre against the enemy'.

US troops on the ground are realising the British weren't inadequate:

"The British shed a lot of blood here," says captain Matthew Peterson, commanding officer of Lima Company. "They sacrificed a lot of men holding on to Sangin. Let's not forget that the British started what we are doing . . . We are building on [that]."
Some soldiers say that despite the British losses, they were unprepared for the intensity of the violence.
"It all just happened so fast," Buckholz says. "We knew Sangin would be tough but we didn't realise how fast it would happen. As soon as we got here it was, like, bam. There was no time to ease into it. People started dying immediately." (source)
Now the US has made a peace deal of their own.  They are cautiously optimistic although ISAF has been careful not to overstate the outcome of this latest deal which some analysts worry will have little more than a localised impact.

There's nothing more demoralising than an ally criticising your best efforts and saying  they're not good enough.  I never heard Liam Fox defend our troops when the avalanche of negativity rained down on them last year.

The Strategic Defence and Security Review seeks to lay off 17,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen within five years.  The first of their allowances cuts, which it is said amounts to a drop in annual income of £1,400 for every service person, will be made in April and then phased in over the next two years.  Some payments, such as the commitment bonus for long service, have been cut by as much as half, the MoD has revealed.

HM Forces will be reduced by 17,000 within five years and possibly earlier.  There are many within the three services who know they can command much higher salaries in the business world and to see their colleagues humiliated by the US without any redress from their own government, plus losing income, will break the invisible bonds of loyalty our forces give to the country.  The best will leave once their current service agreements conclude.  We'll be left with a much weaker military.  That will suit the unelected manipulators in the EU perfectly.

Is the US our ally?  I certainly have reservations.

Hi SR, the US of A will do what ever suits the US of A. If it also suits your purposes, your in luck, otherwise tough. Consider the revelations of wikileaks.
And as for agreements with the Taliban, their religion tells them it is agreeable to lie to the enemy,so perhaps we should study their religion to understand them.

The USA will always put their own interests first.

I think that the USA regards the UK very much like we regard the Ghurkas. Foreign, cheap and expendable.

I haven't studied Islam Apogee but I know someone who has. It's similar to Christianity insofar as it can be interpreted to suit.

Exactly Strathturret. Yet we have politicians who think we're still a leading power.

In another 50 years we'll be quite insignificant.

The USA is the UK's ally ,in the same way a UK dog allies his US master.
BUT We need to disband ALL OUR INVASION FORCES.They cost us money and cause terrorism.
National standing armies or "taxpayer funded invasion forces" MAKE US ALL LESS SAFE!
IN REALITY there is not a standing army that can defeat a militia army. For example Switzerland has disbanded its standing army and ALL military is now a peoples militia ,and they get trained and keep thier weapons at home.Thier military spending is miniscule and the British army would not have a hope in hell of taking Switzerland, they'd be slaughtered, stalingrad style.
Switzerland suffers less terrorism ,because its invasion forces are not in someone elses land, less proverty because it does not have to pay for these invasion forces.
FYI today their are more UK Vets serviing time in UK jails for monsterous crimes(that go unreported) than are serving in Afghanistan!! How much does this cost in money and suffering?

Well we cannot trust Obama. I would like to know which religion he follows. But he most certainly has no love for the UK.

Have you read about the Afghan, who has lost a leg from one of those cowardly bombs, who converted from Islam to Christianity. The President of Afghanistan, it was stated, ordered a crackdown on Christianity. This man is in jail awaiting the death sentence. FOR? Converting to Christianity.

Our young men and women are being killed in this God forsaken country protecting this ghastly President.

What is the response from Cameron and Co? Silence.

Time to come home.

As for RMcGeddon, I actually admire the many young men and women willing to fight for their country. Obviously you wouldn't!

Cuthulan, no doubt you will move to Switzerland. I found your contribution weird.

I point out that our armed forces have made us LESS SAFE(PTSD vets walk our streets committing crimes) and increased global terrorism and YOU think that weird?

What to talk about weird, lets examine your comment
"Well we cannot trust Obama. I would like to know which religion he follows. But he most certainly has no love for the UK."

Do you really think what religion he believes ,or not, makes a difference!!?!?
He will listen to the Israel and oil lobbies!!!
Title: “Washington Lobbying Grew to $3.2 Billion Last Year, Despite Economy”
Authors: Center for Responsive Politics
The Center calculates that interest groups spent $17.4 million on lobbying for every day Congress was in session in 2008, or $32,523 per legislator per day.
Pro-Israel groups, food processing companies, and the oil and gas industry increased their lobbying expenditures the most (as a percentage) between 2007 and 2008.
ITS THE SAME IN THE UK
Labour Friends of Israel is a UK Parliament-based lobby group promoting support within the British Labour Party for a strong bilateral relationship between Britain and Israel.Jonathan Mendelsohn the former chairman of the LFI was quoted in the Jerusalem Post saying “Zionism is pervasive in New Labour. It is automatic that Blair will come to Labour Friends of Israel meetings.”

AND YOU think this is normal and taxpayer money well spent?!!?

The USA quite rightly sees only its own national interests in everything it does and if these include stringing the UK along then so be it for them. Accordingly, I've never seen sense nor reason in the special relationship which as some of your posters have said equates to master and servant or master and dog in such cases as Blair and little Dr Fox.

The special relationship is part of the illusion spun by the politicians and the ruling class which goes along with the fatuity of the phrase punching above our weight - meaning we go along with wars outwith our national interests if the Americans wish it. If the UK remains as at present, it should be as a medium sized european state looking after its own interests with the same sort of zeal as the French do for themselves. Thsi would also mean taking a hatchet to the overblown military hierarchy that the establishment seeks to maintain

The outcome would be the removal of any illusions about military adventurism which inevitably end
in the unnecessary deaths of soldiers. We would all be the better for it and in an independent Scotland this would be inevitable anyway. Come the day.

Cuthulan. And your solution to stop 'vets' maiming and killing?

Sometimes I think it wise to sit back and ponder a while. I have no intention at all of pandering to your wild and ridiculous assertions.

I know only too well of the number of former military personnel living rough on the streets. I also know that some , not all as you appear to suggest, do commit crimes. This is because they have not been given the correct training for civilian life. (Watch Panorama this week on this very subject)

I have seen many of these distressed people through my work within a charity helping homeless people.

I, in my small way, try to help them. Unlike your rather hysterical rantings which add nothing to any debate. I suggest, as I started, a little pondering may help you. You certainly should calm down dear.

"Cuthulan. And your solution to stop 'vets' maiming and killing?"

Did you read my comment or is it comprehension that troubles you?
We should never have sent them in the first place. I could see this comming ,so did millions of others, its NOT THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE BEEN AT WAR!(Though it was supposed to have been the last decades ago)

A militia army is the solution. Not an army in the world could defeat a militia army and there is no a nation that a militia army could overrun! i.e. switzerland model

"I, in my small way, try to help them. Unlike your rather hysterical rantings which add nothing to any debate. I suggest, as I started, a little pondering may help you. You certainly should calm down dear."

So you want to help them by keeping on sending them to invade other people land?!!?well then you really should know better. My family has a long military background and i work for non-profit organisations too.You come across like a jam and jerusalum womans institute type, you know the type that stole aborigial generations and still cannot admit the suffering they caused!Living in denial and refusing to talk about such subjects
Your answers are just condescending! You just repeat false soundbytes and propaganda, You should certainly get informed!!

I removed my post. It was put up in haste and wasn't really relevant to SR's post.
I too admire our troops and spent many years in the Forces myself.

subrosa said...

Cuthulan, our military have the title HM Forces, not invasion forces. I don't think you have much, if any, experience of the military.

A militia army still requires highly skilled personnel and I do know Switzerland is just as involved as any other European country in security matters.

I don't need your inaccurate information about vets in UK jails. Yes, there is far too high a number in jail but that is because they haven't been given anything like enough support to return to civilian life. They're dumped once they're no longer required and that the fault of politicians.

The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan hasn't helped with the UK's security I agree but don't blame the people who join up for that. Most join to protect this country and it's the power-mad politicians who sent them there.

subrosa said...

Thanks strapworld. People never learn from history do they. Religion is responsible for so many wars.

I agree. The silence from our politicians is deafening.

subrosa said...

Richard, we're becoming a laughing stock the way we pander to US military policies. Ask the Germans, French etc.

Of course the US is protecting itself. We should be doing that too, but while our military is away we reduce the security of these islands.

A military life is a good one and why so many are attracted is that it's a community where ever person's contribution counts. Endeavour, trust and loyalty is paramount.

We lost that years ago in civilian life.

are just that expendable...and by extention so are we!

Apology accepted cuthulan.

I never called you a liar and I never said you were speaking untruths. Yes I did question your military experience which I think was essential given the emotive words you used such as 'hired killers'. You may not be aware that our military has some of the best scientists and engineers this country possesses. They just choose to work in the military environment.

My military experience is certainly not Hollywood - oh how I wish, but I must admit some years have passed since I had hands on experience.

I'd also disagree that vet prisoners have all committed monstrous crimes because that's what you imply. That's certainly is untrue as I still work occasionally for a large military charity and the main cause of vets breaking is law is alcohol and drugs. My own opinion about that is my open anger at the lack of pre-civvie street education they receive. I could ramble on about that for hours but I won't.

Your post was not removed because of the content as I'm a big girl and can take insults but I refuse to have such language on here. Mild swearing can be acceptable occasionally but the two words you use are not. My regular readers know this and I'm sorry if it offends you but that's the way it is here. There are plenty other blogs who accept swearing.

While I appreciate the anti-war movement's motivation, many appreciate the stance I take. That is we need a military and a very professional one. We won't have that in 10 years time.

WHAT DO OUR INVASION FORCES ACTUALLY DO.....
Marine Corps Commandant Smedley Butler
I spent 33 years (in the Marines)…most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism…
I had a swell racket. I was rewarded with honors, medals, promotions. I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was operate in three city districts. The Marines operated on three continents
ITS TAXPAYER PAID MUSCLE WITH CORPORATIONS TAKING THE PROFITS OF WAR!
STANDING ARMY BOOT CAMPS ARE EXPENSIVE AND DE-HUMANISE THIER SOLDIERS AS PART OF TRAINING, THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN A MILITIA ARMY
WAR AND OUR STANDING ARMY IS BANKRUPTING AND ENDANGERING OUR NATION.

subrosa,I am NOT "anti-soldier", I do not claim all vets commit monstous crimes. But a lot do , not because they are monsters ,but as reflex from training.Yes drugs and alcohol are a problem too, but that is always the case, they are trying to drown some horrific memories, drugs are just a side-effect.BUT i lot of crimes are intentionally covered up
WHO REALLY KILLED HOLLY WELLS AND JESSICA CHAPMAN?...PROBABLY JUST MORE VICTIMS OF WAR...AND SO THEN IS IAN HUNTLEY
How many of you know that at the time of the Ian Huntley trial that hard evidence that the monster or monsters who murdered Holly and Jessica might well reside inside the razor wire at USAF Lakenheath, was provided at a Courts Martial held on 23 July 2003. A military judge found against Technical Sergeant Randy Bitter on three charges of child sex abuse. Tech Sgt Bitter pleaded guilty to carnal knowledge with a female child under 12 years of age, and two counts of indecent acts with the same victim. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment with dishonorable discharge from the United States Air Force.
Despite the fact that Bitter was convicted less than 500 yards away from the exact point at which Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman's bodies were dumped, not one British newspaper or television network anywhere in the land reported these horrifying crimes, details of which were made available in "Immediate Press Release #073103-4" dated 31 July 2003 at USAF Lakenheath. Predictably perhaps, these frightening lookalike offences and their obvious implications have been withheld from the jurors in the trial of Ian Huntley.

THE JAPANESE ARE TIRED OF HAVING THIER YOUNG GIRLS RAPED AND NO-ONE PROSECUTED BECAUSE THE RAPISTS ARE MILITARY
Criminal Cases involving US Military Personnel in Japan.
The most recent examples of criminal activity in Okinawa are as follow:
- In September 1995, three marines raped an elementary school girl. This led to a huge gathering of prefectural residents in October 1995, with 85,000 residents participating.
- In October 1998, a high school girl was run down and killed by a drunken US marine.
- In June 2001, there was rape case by a US airman.
- In November 2002, there was an attempted rape case by a US lieutenant.
- In May 2003, a US marine in Okinawa raped a woman, resulting in extensive injuries.
- In July 2005, a US airman in Okinawa indecently assaulted an elementary school girl.
- In February 2008, a US marine was suspected in the assault a junior high school girl.
Furthermore, in 2008, the number of US military personnel in Okinawa apprehended totaled 52, including for two burglaries and three rape cases.
THE UK JUST HAS FEWER FOREIGN BASES
I have a good friend that went AWOL got drunk and stole a tank and drove it through a major European city ,destroying 9 cars and killing 2 civilians in the process. As he was British army ,he only faced a military court ,they gave him 3 months.Today he is an ex-army alcoholic ,artist.
Another friend i spent new year with as he is just back from Afghanistan and finished his service, he is not rejoining. He is angry at the lies and waste of life on all sides. He has been used! He does not think of himself as a hero, just a survivor. He finds it difficult to deal with those that blame HIM for the war!! He is very lucky that he has good friends and family to help him back to normality.
Our modern standing armies are free to commit rape and murder without fear of prosecution, this would not be the case if we had a militia army!In times gone by it was the priest handing out absolution for sins, today its the polition granting legal immunity to anyone in dogtags. Its not just James Bond that has a licence to kill and doesn't take no for an answer from a woman and does not fear prosecution!!
The armed forces is full of the good, the bad and the ugly ,just like joe public.I do not blame the average soldier,a lot of bad things are done by good people in really bad situations. There is no glory in war, when "the balloon goes up" the survival instinct and training kicks in,and survival at any cost is the rule, nothing glorious in that!
Especially when YOU are in someone elses country!!

THE MILITARY INVASION FORCES (STANDING ARMIES) ,DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIER SOLDIERS
IN STANDING ARMIES THE SOLDIERS FEED OFF THE PEOPLE, IN MILITIA ARMIES THE SOLDIERS ARE THE PEOPLE!!
THE REAL MILITARY STANDING ARMY SLAUGHTER GOES UNREPORTED
The 73 new patients at the U.S. military’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center pushed the number of arrivals last week to 412
Landstuhl is the biggest U.S. military hospital overseas, and its doctors also treat troops with noncombat injuries and illnesses. It usually treats 30 to 50 injured military personnel a day.
http://articles.latimes.com/2004/nov/14/world/fg-wounded14

Amputations, burns, brain injuries and shrapnel wounds proliferate in Afghanistan.Of particular concern are the so-called hidden wounds, traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder that can have long-term side effects such as depression.
Since 2007, more than 70,000 service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury – more than 20,000 of them this year, according to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/11/military-sees-increase-in_n_353488.html
THE ARMY AND WARS FOR PROFIT DO NOT JUST STEAL SOLDIERS PRESENT, THEY STEAL THIER FUTURE AS WELL!!
“By now most people know that DU has damaged tens of thousands of our own troops and caused soaring cancer rates in target populations, including the people of Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Over 130,000 veterans of the first Gulf War have been declared “unfit for service” because of medical conditions which independent scientists and physicians connect to exposure to depleted uranium.
What is less well known is the staggering rate of birth defects in the children of the veterans of these wars. The British are reporting rates as high as 65%. It seems that breathing in the radioactive dust from exploded DU shells not only causes decapacitating illnesses, but massive genetic damage as well.
The use of DU was started by the first President Bush and continued by Clinton. Both could plead ignorance. But now the data is in. We know better. The continued use of over 2,000 tons of this toxic and highly radioactive substance in the current Iraq War is inexcusable.”
Allegations that Britain was complicit in the use of chemical weapons linked to an upsurge in child deformity cases in Iraq, are being investigated by the Ministry of Defence.
After the battle, in which it is alleged that a range of illegal weaponry was used, evidence has emerged of large numbers of children being born with severe birth defects.
Iraqi families who believe their children’s deformities are caused by the deployment of the weapons have now begun legal proceedings against the UK Government. They accuse the UK Government of breaching international law, war crimes and failing to intervene to prevent a war crime.

YOU SUPPORT THIS SYSTEM?
ITS A MEAT GRINDING SYSTEM THAT DESTROYS OUR CHILDREN ,TURNS MEN INTO MONSTERS ,BANKRUPTS THE NATION ,SLAUGHTERS INNOCENTS AND MAKES US LESS SAFE!!
BUT OUR POLITIONS AND BIG BUSINESS MAKE BILLIONS...AND OUR BOYS LOOK SO NICE IN A UNIFORM....SO ITS ALL WORTH IT THEN?
Sorry for the emotional post, but disbanding our standing armies and installing a miltia army model would stop this slaughter, stop politions sending our children off to slaughter for profit, makes us more safe ,reduce terrorism and crime and would cost a lot less.
I agree that civilian politions started this slaughter, not soldiers.A political system of Direct Democracy would bring the guilty politions to justice!
Subrosa ,You will be relieved .This is my "last post" on this emotional subject
