Normal Service Will Be Resumed Tomorrow

Obviously the picture isn't me but it's very much how I've been feeling for the past 18 hours.  Suddenly late last night my internet connection halted and I've spent the last 12 hours phoning my ISP (3 hours in all) but with little help other than inform me an engineers visit would cost up to £99.

With having no internet access I couldn't even use my mobile to look for advice but suddenly around lunchtime I decided it must be the router as the telephone line was working perfectly.

A 40 mile journey. £125 lighter and some sympathetic assistance in installing the new router has solved the problem, but I'm not only physically but mentally exhausted so I intend to have a relaxing evening.

Normal service will be resumed tomorrow.  Fingers crossed.

PS  I wish I'd kept that photo from yesterday's post for this one. It would have been far more appropriate.

Poor SR! My sympathies, however I trust your journey took you on a scenic route(r)?

Any physical journey here is scenic. Strangely enough it always delights me and I must have done it thousands of times.

There's something to be said for living up here WfW.

£125 for a router??
What did you get? A solid gold one?
I take it that you have a domestic/small business set-up? If so, you should not have spent more than £30-40 on 802.11n category router (about the highest speed available right now).
Even worse, I have a couple spare in my 'bots box' as backups for my network.

That IS an awfy lot to pay for a router. Glad it's working again though. There are few things more frustrating. And I don't see a thing wrong with your blog. I like simple blog designs myself.

There are some precautions that you can take for the future (if you don't know already).
It's worth finding out where you have public access in your area. We've got it at the local library, it used to be free, but they charge now. If you have a lap-top, its also at Costa Coffee, but I guess you don't have many of those in the far north! Anyway, I don't like the coffee, and so it costs the same as the library! It's also worth finding out if and how you can access your e-mail via the web (webmail) as this means that you can read and send e-mails anywhere (provided you know your passwords!)

I recently got a new modem free from my ISP (PlusNet) They were offering new improved and cheaper service on their site, so I phoned them and asked if I could transfer to it. The response was "yes" and "do you want the free modem which comes if you sign up for a year". So I got a cheaper service and a free modem, for once I felt I'd got a bargain! So again,it's worth keeping an eye on their home page, because they won't actually tell you if they've reduced the price.

Computer World didn't have much choice steve and it's a combination one with wifi in it too. Does that make sense?

Yes EP, my local library has access too. I phoned them earlier and they said I could go and tap into their wifi using my laptop.

No, I think the nearest Costa Coffee now is Aberdeen or Edinburgh. Well done. TalkTalk give nothing away. Just after lunchtime I saw a couple of BROpenreach vans outside - around 100 yards apart, so I went outside thinking they were here to fix the problem. Shows know stupid I really am. They were here to install fast-speed broadband cables, but one of them was very helpful and said the problem was either in the junction box or here with the router and suggested I borrow a router.

My friend was out so I decided to take the chance and buy one. Would have been daft to wait another 48 hours, pay £99 then be told it was the router.

Internet problems make me very mad too, Subrosa! I hope the worst is over and you can have a lovely, relaxing evening. Happy Valentines Day to you, too.

Thank you Bunni. It has been a pleasant evening. During the day I managed to attend to a few jobs I'd been neglecting while I waited for my ISP to call back, so I didn't waste time.

Thanks Jeanne. I too prefer simple and easy to read.

I guess your router didn't like all the activity of shuffling your blogroll? ;)

Glad to see it got sorted in the end!

On Valentine's day? We know you were really spending your time bathing in asses' milk and annointing yourself with emollients, unguents and divers mysterious lotions to inflame Mr SR's ardour. You don't have to be coy with us :-)

This technology is great when it works Julia but when there's a blip I'm lost. Was the workers outside who helped yesterday explaining it must be the junction box or the router and when I contacted neighbours and there broadband was fine, then I knew the answer.

Oh Woodsy, what a lovely picture. I do use mysterious lotions right enough. The usual response is 'what's that smell?' As for ardour, I couldn't afford the cost of the power needed to stir it. Utility bills are so much higher than they were 10 years ago. :)

Do what??

Ringwinggit, my mobile phone has internet access through the wifi in the house. The wifi was also disabled.

I once had awful problems here with internet connections and was off line for THREE MONTHS! On the up side I once again had a tidy house and no ironing!

Glad all is well now Subrosa.

Jings Joe, I couldn't think of worse than three months intense housework. Yesterday was enough for me although my gleaming oven etc are a result of my frustration. :)

The new singing dancing thing doesn't work nearly as well as the last one. It disconnects regularly and I can't use my iPad in a part of the house where I find it most useful.

No idea why because I would have thought a more modern (and expensive) piece of equipment would have been better. This router includes wifi in it. I think, if it was possible to disable the wifi and use the old separate one, then that would help. Auch my mind boggles. :)
