subrosa,

Your head-line reminds me of being in boarding school where, every Friday evening, the housemaster would announce "The cook has made some rock-cakes so take your pick" which was always followed by my dutiful and sycophantic laugh.

Many thanks. For the following post when looking at stuff from 1946 I saw that the London to Edinburgh third class return train fare was £6-18-9. That was a lot of money then. No wonder my uncle always used to put his old uniform on when going by train.

Brownlie, what can I say? Here's me thinking it would remind you of Hughie Green. :)

My pleasure Mark.

Goodness Demetrius, that was a lot of money then. The mail train was cheaper but look much longer if I remember and you're right, the military travelled free if going or returning from leave.

Excellent list!

Hope Dundee is sunny and bright.

Thanks Aangirfan. It's not quite Dundee and it was, once more, torrential rain earlier but has brightened up. It wasn't the -3 the BBC said overnight though. That's a blessing.
