Long Johns or Thermals?

The picture was taken in County Durham earlier today.  It's not a record of the first snowfall in the UK this winter - I think that belongs to Scotland as the A93 was blocked a couple of times in recent weeks - but it's predicted that temperatures will drop as low as -10 later this week in rural parts of the country.

But that wasn't what caught my eye in the article.  It was the comment from the Met Office forecaster Alex Fox:
of March this year at the top of Braemar, a mountain in Scotland that's 1,000ft abov
.'The last time temperatures reached that low was on the night of the 9th and 10th of March this year at the top of Braemar, a mountain in Scotland that's 1,000ft above sea level.

Braemar isn't a mountain in Scotland, it's rather a pretty town nestling in the Grampian mountains and at the northerly end of Glenshee.  The highest mountain is Lochnagar at 3,786ft with Beinn a' Ghoi and Beinn Dearg following closely behind at 3,671ft and 3,304ft respectively.  Braemar town is just over 1,000ft above sea level.

For all its faults the Mail usually gets quotes correct and it's no surprise that the Met Office employs those who know little about the topography of north Scotland.  After all, it's the Met Office who are responsible for some of the nonsense we're told about man being responsible for climate change.

Anyway time to dig out the boots and gloves.  Winter is on the way.

"Long Johns or Thermals?"

Oddly enough you can get thermal long johns in the Damart catalogue. :-D

Typical Daily Mail though employing some idiot reporter to concoct a local colour story.

"Long johns" for me, thanks very much. Just remember to pull up your socks above and not beneath so that they are not clearly visible!

"Thermals" is some new fangled invention from the 1970s, itself a stupid abbreviation for "thermal underwear".

I think Tesco would prefer you in thermals Nicko, even though Mrs M likes to snuggle up when you're walking up and down the aisles. :)

That's where I've seen them QM. I tend to like silk in winter and long silk socks do me fine. Not too expensive if you shop online either.

The DM usually isn't too bad with quotes but this one is too near home for me to ignore.

Thermals never do as they say on the label for me Mark. As I say I prefer silk and wear silk socks under my usual socks. It's insulating I find and not at all bulky.

Thansk a lot Niko. I was just about to have some supper....

I've noticed that the weather forecast for Scotland is a much more hurried affair than the South East of England one... and when they are short of time, they just leave us out altogether.

Mind, as 9 times out of 10 it's wrong...who cares.

You get cold SR, just call me. I know how to keep a girl warm........build a nice fire, lots of tea/coffee laced with whisky and......

Many of my English friends care Tris although they've given up phoning to ask if I'm snowed in. For the first few years since I returned they would phone saying the BBC was warning snow was covering Scotland.

Aye they're wrong most of the time.

Rosie, did you see that article in the Sunday Post by some twat who was a big knob in the weather office, who said it was impossible to forecast 3-4 months in advance?

Long will that be the case DL, as long as they continue to ignore Piers and Joe Bastardi. I dare say they are waiting until they can think up how they do it, then claim glory for their 'new found' projection techniques.

I'm reliably informed by my young Goth friend that the things to have are bloomers; very loose over-knickers which are worn under ths skirt and have fetching lace ruching at the knee.

subrosa,

Is your picture one of Annabelle Goldie lost in the bleak and desolate landscape of Scottish Tory policies?

subrosa said...

No I didn't DL. I can't access the Sunday Post these days. Don't know why. I just get a page from July no matter what I do.

subrosa said...

WoaR, my grannie used to wear these. Heavy cotton they were. I suppose they did keep her warm but they were bulky.

Brownlie, could well be couldn't it? She looks set for take-off whoever she is. :)

Longjohns or thermals? Both! and I've just gone to Maplin and bought a cermic heater to help de-ice the car cabin. I've also bought two pairs of "his and her's" ice cleats that you can wear on your normal shoes when the pavements get skaters. Aaaargh, it's back!

What tosh.

In all those Climate-Changists at IPCC prophesy it'll get warmer!

These clampon things saved my sanity last year Dram. Without them I wouldn't have been able to get around. I stick mine on one pair of boots and carry another pair of boots with me. Easier than bending down every time for the on/off action and also saves the rubber being continually stretched.

Good one Joe. DL will appreciate that.
