Butter Up Your Friends

Pass The Butter .. Please.

This is interesting . .. .

Margarine
was originally manufactured to fatten  turkeys.  When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put  all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their  heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get  their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal  so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.  How do you like it?   They have come out  with some clever new flavourings..

 DO  YOU KNOW..
The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both  have the same amount of calories.

Butter  is slightly higher in saturated fats at
8  grams; compared   to 5 grams for margarine.

Eating
margarine can increase  heart disease in women by  53%  over   eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent  Harvard  Medical Study.

Eating
butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in  other foods.

Butter
has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
only  because  they are added!

Butter
tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of  other foods.

Butter
has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years

And now, for Margarine..

Very High in Trans
fatty acids

Triples risk of coronary
heart disease
Increases  total cholesterol
and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and  lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases  the risk of cancers up to five times..

Lowers  quality of
breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases
insulin response.

And  here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE  IS  THE  PART  THAT  IS  VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine  is but ONE  MOLECULE  away  from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life  and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is  added,  changing the molecular structure of the  substance).

You  can try this yourself:

Purchase  a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded  area.  Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

 *  no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it  (that should tell you something)

 *  it does not rot or smell differently because it has
no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.  Why?   Because it is nearly plastic .  Would you melt your Tupperware and  spread that  on your toast?

Which is why I have never fancied women called 'Marge'!

Also thanks for all the information about butter and marge - good job I have never fancied eating plastic or paint!

This posting reminds me about the health & environmental damage caused by dihydrogen monoxide.

Thousands die each year from its effects, but there's no legislation to ban it, yet.

Oh Rose, this is dreadful! It's a piece of internet 'science' worthy of The Sun's horoscope page.

8 grams per what? 5 grams per what? Triple risk of CHD compared to what? Risk of cancer 'up to' five times what? And it may (or may not) be one molecule away from plastic (whatever that means) but then we are only 5% of our DNA away from chimps and it doesn't make us monkeys.

The typeface and colours are not your style. Admit it - you were sent this by a friend in an email that said 'pass it on or your cat will die' and you've copied it in whole. This really is not your standard of post. There's enough bad science out there without anyone adding to it :) Or am I missing the point, and you were joking?

I am a big fan of butter, by the way, and never eat marge unless I have to for politeness' sake.

My mother insisted that "margarine was for the poor" and that we were not so hard up that we couldn't afford butter, even if at times we just got "bread and scrape"!

I suppose it depends whether you're talking about the old hard margarine that was around when I was a kid. The Mayo Clinic doesn't think margarine's so bad -
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/butter-vs-margarine/AN00835

And this link seems to indicate that, as Richard says above, it's a bit of an urban myth -

Are you saying that Leslie Crowther was lying to us all along?

WfW, I do hope Leg Iron doesn't read this because he's the man who will tell you the brutal truth about margarine.

It isn't good for you. Eat butter or nothing. Are we too old to change? Then again I've not eaten margarine for many years.

subrosa said...

Excellent link Joe. Of course they won't ban it any more than they'll ban cigarettes with nicotine.

subrosa said...

Sorry Richard. Yes I know it's flimsy, at the very least, on detail but it was an email and the evidence is out there and easy to find.

I apologise for posting it without any links but I've been otherwise occupied this weekend and I thought it may bring a few adverse comment.

So pleased to hear you're a butter fan anyway. I'm sure buttercups will shine under your chin. :) Do you remember that?

subrosa said...

Well, knowing what I do now EP I wouldn't touch it with a knife.

subrosa said...

Jock, the Mayo clinic promotes anything that'll make them money. I used to believe in their analyses but with marg no.

I'd rather listen to the likes of microbiologist Leg Iron who knows the truth. (he's blogger underdogs bite upwards).

Jings banned, when my family were young I used that stuff all the time for baking etc. And my Dad preferred it to butter all his life.

It didn't kill him though, prostate cancer did. Could Stork have contributed because he was a man who was most moderate in everything.

"I'm sure buttercups will shine under your chin. :) Do you remember that?"

Very well indeed. My mother always said butter wouldn't melt, right after I had crashed my cart through the roses or something.

subrosa said...

Oh dear Richard. Sometimes these sayings don't revert to prophesies. :)

I do hope you're still not hurting.

Leg-iron said...

The tub-packaged stuff now available isn't even margarine. It's not called that - it's called 'spread'. Margarine used to be based on plant oils rather than buttermilk (remember the old 'You can't tell Stork from butter'? Everyone I knew could).

The stuff on sale now actually tastes like plastic, if you're used to butter. You get the same flavour if you lick the tub. I won't call it margarine. Plasticine is more accurate.

Butter goes off if you keep it too long. 'Proper' margarine does too although it lasts longer than butter. That plasticine stuff doesn't decay.

The tub it's in will probably rot first.

I won't try to stop anyone eating it but I won't touch it. All I'll say is - look at the ingredient list on butter, and then the list on the plasticine. Then, once fully informed, decide which you'd rather eat.

SR. Give Leggy a plug for his new book. I can't wait to read it !
We're of similar views.
Marg or butter ? I hate both and love dry rolls so I don't care. I've never bought a lottery ticket in my puff. Yes i'm different too ;)

I was fine. It was the roses she was worried about.

Thanks for that light and amusing piece.
Despite the best efforts of cardiologists, dieticians and GPs I have managed to resist converting to one of these ‘plastic’ spreads.
For me its all a mater of ‘quality of life’. What could be better than a slice of still warm fresh baked bread with lashings of good honest butter.

@ Joe Public – Fully with you on your campaign against DHMO. I’ve even seen people adding this evil stuff to a glass of fine malt.

Dear! Dear! Typical of people who will stick the worst poisons like tobacco and alcohol into their bodies crying fowl about how they will not touch something like margarine.

You have got to laugh where humans consider themselves intelligent when the like of this shows otherwise.

Richard said...

"crying fowl about how they will not touch something like margarine"

That's just chicken.

Jim Baxter said...

OK, we all make mistakes - I surely do - and shoudn't get wide when someone else does. Especially not when it's Billy. I've agreed with Billy too often to get wide with him.

But this idea of crying fowl disturbs me. I like a bit of chicken and stir-fried duck you see. But now I'm wondering. Are the Buddhists right? Is animal life too sacred to eat? What pain in other animals do we ignore for the comfort of esting them?

But, where does this logic lead? Must we then consider the pain, say, of spuds and their relatives when we eat them? Do Maris Pipers cry too?

No, it's no use. Eat everything but be sure to apologise to your food before you do. That's the only answer. Watch Tampopo if you don't believe me.

subrosa said...

Thanks for that LI. You were the one who inspired me to post this because of your knowledge of 'spread'.

subrosa said...

RM, I will do that tomorrow. Have made a note. We'll get the Westminster traffic on the blog tomorrow you see. :)

subrosa said...

Yoohoo TT, great to see you. Listen to Leg Iron's comment. He's the one who knows.

Hope you're doing ok. Stopped swanning round the world yet? ;)

subrosa said...

Now there's something else I didn't know RWG.

subrosa said...

I see your Mum similar priorities to me Richard. :)

subrosa said...

Good for you John. Natural food must be better for us than chemically processed stuff. Like you I don't eat much butter but I do enjoy that slice of warm toast...

subrosa said...

That's a good link CH. I've read it. Hope others do too.

subrosa said...

Oh dear Billy. Here's me a nicotine user and alcohol user. Back of the class for me eh?

I've never professed to be intelligent. That's for others to judge. Not even a multitude of letters after my name makes me intelligent.

subrosa said...

:) Richard.

subrosa said...

Stir fried duck Jim? That's decimation of a poor duck. Best a confit or lightly roasted breast.

Jim, I'm not apologising to food before I eat it. That's a desperate attempt to give me a conscience. But there is a point there. Animals when they're deid provide us with food (some of them at least). When we're deid we're just fertisiler. Says something but I don't know what. :)

Clams Linguini said...

We all gotta go sometime.

subrosa said...

Ah Clams but I'm going to go 'butter side up'. :)

Over easy for me sugar.

Billy Carlin said...

Jim - You are right it was a mistake as I typed the comment quickly before I went out this morning.

I have always been excellent at spelling but I don't know if it is an age thing when you have got to look at words twice to figure out if you have spelt it right when before you would not have to think about it. Maybe it is the margarine!

If I thought you were not intelligent Subrosa then I would not read your blog it is just the irony of people with regard to how they decide not to put certain things into their body when they indulge in even worst things.

subrosa said...

That's true Billy, we all have choices to make. Because I poison myself with certain legal substances I try to make good with my diet. In fact I'm now at the stage that I believe the 'old' Scottish diet was much better for us than what we eat today. Porridge, fish, veg - all fresh back in the 50s and all seasonal of course.

Now, don't you be saying I should get out more. :)

When are we really going to get to the nub of the matter - when all Governments have to carry a health warning.

Governments Kill; sounds about right.

subrosa said...

For a second there Dram I thought you'd written 'when are we really going to get to the knob of the butter'. Then of course your words registered. :)

Governments do kill. More often than anyone cares to know.

One molecule away from plastic?

Why, so is anything else you care to name.

("Plastic" is a generic term, btw, covering dozens or hundreds of different things. I wonder what they meant? Probably they meant "I am profoundly ignorant of science, especially chemistry, so please bear with me while I invent a few absurd scares")

subrosa said...

Butter isn't Weekend Yachtsman. I'm no scientist but Leg Iron will give you the truth about butter and 'spreads'.
