Brown's Final Gift to Cameron

Is it any wonder I can't tolerate Gordon Brown? His lies and obsession with his presbyterian upbringing made me realise he is obsessed with power and will do and say anything to be seen as one of the great leaders of the world. Thankfully history will not record him as being successful as chancellor or PM.

One of the final acts of Brown in his dying days in No 10 was to order the Prime Minister's salary to be cut from £194,000 to £150,000. This was done with such stealth that no formal announcement was ever made.

It would appear David Cameron had no idea that, when he entered No 10, he would be earning only marginally more than he had as the leader of the Opposition. The 5% cut he introduced - across the board cuts in ministerial salaries - during his first days as PM took his salary down to £142,000.

Doesn't this action show the devious, spiteful and calculating character of one of the worst PMs we have ever had? I certainly think so.

So, if Gordon thinks PM's job is worth only £150k, why did that duplicitous twat take £194k pa?

He owes the electorate both an explanation, and £54k for each of his years as PM.

It just shows his attitude to his fall from power Joe. No, it shows his nasty character. A loser who can't take it.

Thank goodness he's no longer in power. He does nothing for the reputation of politicians.

Cameron hasn't said a word about this but he's a gentleman and playing it silently.

Should have been more, and should have been done earlier. Then again Brown's administration have enacted and defended the payment of Fred the Shred's pension.

Cameron has no option but to go along with what Brown did. If he or his supporters complain, it will undermine their "We're all in this together" argument.

By the way, thanks for the comment on my blog. Wee bit more freckly that I was before going away...

It's funny though, like a tintack on the teacher's seat funny.

Glad you enjoyed your holiday Allan.

I wonder, if it had happened to Brown, if he'd have been so quiet about it. Doubt it. He'd have had some of his hencemen on TV within hours.

Oh Conan, it's not funny ha ha surely it's funny strange. I mean, who other than a completely nasty person would behave like that?

Then again, look how he refused to acknowledge Scotland one the SNP became the government.

I always knew he was a nasty POS, SR, and this proves it.

Strange man. I mean he must have known it was likely to be Mr Cameron who was next in, and that the loss of a few thousand wasn't going to be the end of the world to him, or indeed, on the off chance, to Mr Clegg. They are both from VAST wealth. Neither will ever be hungry, nor indeed would they ever lack the money for a round the world cruise, luxury class.

So, it seems a weird thing to do, and then not to capitalise on it as an act of self denial... given that Brown, although rich, is not in the class of Cameron or Clegg.

I think he's mad as a hatter actually. He should probably be locked up in a padded cell, but then he'd be let out for "in the community"

Oh did I leave out the care... that'll be because the government forgot that bit too.

SLEEKIT......is the word you might be thinking off.

Hi SR, considering the trail of nasty, spiteful, vicious, devious deeds he has allegedly been responsible for, this is just one more on the record,no doubt there will be more in due course, why are you surprised?
Disgusted yes, surprised, no !

And dont ever forget that he is roaming loose in Scotland now.

Brown is a nasty, twisted individual who should be put down like a dog. There are R.E. teachers in Hornchurch getting 100k per year. Check out the ad over at mine on http://tinyurl.com/327bewv

The odd thing about this episode is how Brown managed to do it. I thought that the PM's salary was agreed by Parliament, along with all the other salaries. How has he managed to create a situation which is binding upon his successor without Parliamentary consent?

His first act that could be said to be in the public interest...

If only he did it on his first day rather than his last.

I assume that someone has mentioned by this time that Brown was only taking 150k£ since (I think) mid-2009. A quick Google search would turn up the announcement. I do sometimes wish people would check things.

That didn't make it right for him to make it permanent, it would seem to me. But a lot of this reaction is way over the top since that WAS the salary he was taking.

No, my dears, he does not "owes the electorate and £54k" and it seems to me an explanation for a lot of worse sins would be what would be better looked for.

Iraq, Dr. Kelly, Afghanistan, and just general bloody-mindedness such as refusing to speak to the FM of Scotland. I despise him but prefer to do it for actual sins.

Cameron could very publicly bring the salary back UP to £ 194K, then announce that he will be claiming NONE of it for his term of office.

The horror that is Brown is going to keep on coming out over the weeks and months and years, even after the devastating portrait by Tom Bower in his biography of Brown, even after we have all written of Brown with our various takes on his raging inadequacy and spite, it will still pour forth; a thoroughly nasty man. Bower even describes Brown's pleasure in being disliked!

The Prime Minister is right to ignore him completely, particularly when Brown fails to come to work.

It does BS doesn't it. Funny that it's the small things in life which show our characters.

subrosa said...

I don't know exactly when it was changed Tris, but by what I can find it was just a number of days before the election. So Brown knew exactly what he was doing and why.

It's not really the matter of the money because, as you say, our top politicians are all very wealthy.

Jeez, don't let him loose around this area. He wouldn't be welcomed in Dundee these days I don't think.

Perfect Dram, just the perfect description!

I wasn't too surprised Apogee, but disgusted as you say. Aye that's what is worrying. According to his wife on Twitter he seems to spend quite a bit of time in Morrisons in Cowdenbeath. As long as he doesn't cross the Tay...

subrosa said...

That's a mystery to me too junican and I can't find anyone who knows why it was allowed.

I too thought salaries had to be approved publicly.

subrosa said...

Well Jeanne, I can't find anything about him taking only £150,000 for the past year. I did come across the fact that he refused to take his salary increase last year though and that he gave up his entitlement to a prime ministerial pension.

This is what my quick google search brought up: http://bit.ly/S3g2B

The post is not about the amount of the salary it's about a principle. Government salaries are usually approved by the Commons. This official reduction was not.

Alex Salmond had a problem about salaries the other year too. He couldn't just reject his MP's salary because legislation wouldn't permit it. Therefore he started the trust fund, in his mother's name, in the north east where he placed a good percentage of his income.

If you don't think it's a sin to avoid the legalities of the land then that's fine. I consider it very unprofessional and it makes me wonder how many other 'small' decisions have been taken without due process being undertaken.

subrosa said...

Yes there is that Alan. I'm sure Cameron could repeal the ruling then change it.

But far better to be dignified and ignore Brown's behaviour I think.

subrosa said...

Brown may be yesterday's fish wrappers firinn, but we'll all be paying for the wrappers for many years to come.

subrosa said...

I can understand him wanting or needing a rest for a while HG, but his disregard of the Queen's Speech spoke volumes.

Mind you, it does go to show his electorate have no interest in the good of the country. If they did then they'd ensure their MP did his job correctly.

hatfield girl said...

One of the local papers in Fife wrote that he was intending to stay as MP until the Scottish general election or a UK general election. Which implies that he will stand down within a year - the Scottish election is in May 2011 isn't it? And if I'm correct in reading 'whichever is the sooner' into that.

But failing to attend the Queen's Speech and state opening is very odd. And where are the children going to school? In Scotland? Or is he in London but not going to work?

subrosa said...

The only word here since the election HG is that he intends to stay on as MP. Yes the Holyrood elections are in a year's time.

Last I heard he was here in Scotland. That was the end of last week. I should think they're going to school here but of course in another 4 week's time it's the school summer holidays.

I very much doubt Sarah Brown would be happy making their house in Scotland her home. She likes the high life and I suggest, under all his blustering about not caring for social events, he really will miss all the fawning etc.

Mr Brown is enjoying a sabbatical before standing as First Minister in 2011 and taking Scotland on to independence and freedom under the guidance and auspices of the Free Kirk.

subrosa said...

Oh RA, I'm so pleased you didn't say 'well deserved sabbatical'.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least. He's bleated on about not having enough money and he won't want to be seen in the multi-millionaire bracket of Tone and his friends.
