Afghanistan

Another British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan. He was from 101 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and was killed yesterday in small arms fire engagement with insurgent forces in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand Province.

He was attached to the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, part of the Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task Force and was part of an EOD team. According to the MoD he died seeking to rid Helmand of IEDs. Our soldiers won't rid Helmand of IEDs, only the Afghanis can do that. The Taliban will continue to lay these killer devices as quickly as they are destroyed and for as long as we remain in their country.

The death toll of British troops in Afghanistan now stands at 309.

Listened to the Russian news programme last night. It announced that US citizens are only now being made aware of the thumping sums of money forked out by their (ours and others as well) military, to the Taliban and a variety of other clan and bandit groups, to allegedly secure free and safe passage for our troops etc. The news programme suggested this will add significantly to the growing US civil belief that the 'war' was lost some time ago.

It (RT) also announced that June has been the bloodiest yet with the loss of 91+ UN and western troops with a very large number wounded not counting the Afghan Army and the civilian dead and wounded.

A long-experienced war reporter stated that "all Afghanistan has to do to win is - not to lose". A stark point made when reflecting on the tenacious and gritty military dead-end inevitability for would-be invaders that is Afghanistan.

It is being suggested that our national instinct and humanity to support and respect our troops is being manipulated (even extra hyped via our MSM - can't keep a good story down?) to take the heat off where our real efforts ought to be made - and that is at the political and big commercial,multi-national, legal and not so legal business doors.

Since Cameron was asked to become prime minister the rate of attrition in Afghanistan has significantly increased....

only the nearness of an election may??? lead to change of policy

I could not dig: I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

I thought that US folk knew about the mass of cash which continually passes to the Taliban Clarinda. How else did they think their troops get supplies when the Taliban control the entry and exit routes.

Your last paragraph doesn't surprise me, it's about right.

I get to read the reports daily on what's occured and who has been injured or lost their life. It's tough knowing what's coming before it hits the news:(

Many of the lads are just fighting for each other and when they return home there's going to be a massive backlash in time over how the UK AF have been used! I wonder if Westmidden are able tonkerp a lid on it. Many will
loose jobs in the forthcoming SDSR.

How very cruel.......

Very true CD, the camaraderie is the envy of many. Will there be a backlash?

Somehow, if the troops are home, I think the general public won't be bother to raise their voices.

Cruel indeed.
