Afghanistan

Yet again the MoD has confirmed the death of a soldier from 3rd Regiment Horse Artillery, attached to 4th Regiment Royal Artillery serving as part of Combined Force Nad-e Ali.

He was killed this morning in a small arms fire incident with insurgent forces.

My sincere condolences to his family and I am very aware there are many military families who regularly think 'There but for the grace of God go I'.

We have now lost 293 of our armed forces in the Afghanistan war.

As The Taliban slowly gain the tactical upper hand, as ever in Afghan history, the visiting forces begin to be slaughtered. 10 at one go, yesterday. This is going exactly as predicted by many bloggers. As has Brown's bail out. Cutting is all that is left. Better a tactical withdrawal than outright defeat.

We seem to losing them every day now. Definitely time to cut and run.

I have to agree with you two gentlemen. NATO are doing their best to downplay the deaths but really they can't nowadays because of the internet. Thank goodness.

Better a little loss of face than a bigger loss of life. We should get out now.

This is terrible news. Military sources say that when we move up to Kandahar it will get even worse.

I think there are those who would try to spin it as a loss of face SR but the British people would just be glad to see them home safely.

Aye GV I've been reading that. Constructing something about it at present.

I wasn't thinking of loss of face here GV, more in international terms. But, as a small country, haven't we already done our fair share in a useless situation?

I'd say we'd done more than our fair share, SR. There seems to be an unwillingness on the part of our European NATO partners to engage fully so, in the event that we would withdraw, any international commentators can keep their thoughts to themselves. Sadly, I can't see it happening though, not with this govt.

Douglas Carswell has a good chance of being elected chair of the Select Defence Committee - he'll keep the MoD on their toes.

Aye GV, sadly this government is going down the same road as the last one. Giving over power to the US is a mistake from all angles.

I do hope Carswell gets the post. He has some knowledge of the subject compared with many who are given posts as jobs for the boys/girls for being 'good'.
