The Long Goodbye

Gordon Brown is to step down as leader of the Labour party before their party conference in September.

I've just witnessed a superb rammy (shouting match) between Alistair Campbell and Adam Bolton on Sky. I do so hope they clip it so that those of you who missed it can see Campbell wind up Adam Bolton until he explodes.

Back to the subject. In Gordon Brown's statement he implies his actions will now open the way for formal talks between the Labour party and the Libdems.

This plays well into the hands of Scotland and the SNP. I won't analyse it further - enough bloggers will do so - but I would say to David Cameron let them get on with it. Any government which wishes to ignore the deficit for another 12 months is one which will bring the country to its knees. Ignoring the state our finances are in is not in the interests of the country.

Now, with Mr Brown stepping down, there will be a weeping and a wailing and a gnashing of teeth in the ….erm? …. erm? …Brown household?
– possibly.

Oh, not until September? I thought he had gone with immediate effect. Sobs.
Not so much a lame duck Prime Minister as a Dead Duck one.

Harriet will just have to wait in the hope that the Lab/LibDem/Others coalition survives long enough for her to become Britains first female Labour Prime Minister.

I do hope the Lib-Dems get into bed with Labour and uncle Tom Cobbly and all.

Once they finish off making the mess that they have got the country into it will be bye bye for a long time to come.

Very possibly John. My problem is they have no one of stature to lead their party.

Don't cry banned. If anyone, Harriet Harman has kept a small amount of dignity in the past couple of years.

That certainly is the thinking of someone close to me Antisthenes. I've always said it would be a poisoned chalice for the tories.

and what' COUNTRY' would that be??
and why do you (unlike Alex) give two hoots for David Cameron.
and the split personality of

"This plays well into the hands of Scotland and the SNP"

AND THEN

"Ignoring the state our finances are in is not in the interests of the country"

Couldn't agree more, Iain.
Can't wait to get rid of the Scots or radically reform the voting system. We have less and less in common with them. And the fact that Brown was Scottish meant that Labour did better in this election than they otherwise would have done.
Other reasons why the Tories didn't get the majority they deserved:
1 Bloody UKIP. I ALWAYS vote UKIP in European elections - because I loathe the European project - but will reconsider this now. I hope they're pleased with themselves. Idiots.
2 Mass immigration. Look at how well Labour did in areas where the indigenous population is minimal. This was of course an entirely deliberate Labour policy.
3 Labour's client state. Brown's policy of beefing up the public sector paid enormous dividends in places like Scotland and the North East.
4 The bizarre and badly communicated 'big society' idea.
5 Cameron - who I otherwise think is brilliant - instructing certain areas to pick token candidates of his liking.

One thing is for sure Alex and the snp are up for signing up to the rainbow coalition alongside Labour and all the rest..

As i've just said on my blog, i don't sense a settled will for electorial reform, we have bigger fish to fry. So I don't see why electorial reform is such a stumbling block, considering the economic situation.

Mr 500 points at scrabble - that'll be the UK then..

Just seen Coward Murphy depart from the Cabinet meeting looking like he'd been fired. Hope we see the back of him and his greetin pus for a few years!

Just seen the rammy on Guido's blog. It's a good job Bolton didn't start singing "When the red red bobin goes bob bob bobing along..."

Oops Niko, sorry, I'm usually more precise in making the difference between England and Scotland. I meant Scotland of course.

Let the SNP go for this labour coalition. It will give Scottish independence a bigger platform.

subrosa said...

Exactly Allan. All the fuss about reform when we have a deficit has big as Greece.

As Lochnagar has pointed out on his blog, what a chance for Salmond to do a deal with the Tory's on full fiscal autonomy and then tell Labour to sling their hook, oh joy joy what interesting times we live in. I'm of to crush a grape.

I dream of Angus Robertson getting the SOS post and putting his boot up Murphys arse?

subrosa said...

CD I didn't see that. Mind you he's only concerned with his own future. He'd never get a job outside politics.

subrosa said...

Ah Allan, I must put a link to it.

subrosa said...

But will Salmond take the chance of the many quiet tory voters in Scotland KBW?

I doubt it. He wants to be on the side of the winners and now Brown's going to go he thinks he's there. I hae ma doots.

Sky's mini-volcano (YouTube)

This is really Round Two. They almost came to blows on Sky's Election Night show too. On that occasion, Campbell was bemoaning the treatment of Labour by the right-wing media. He then over-egged his argument by including Skynews, Murdock and Boulton himself. Boulton didn't quite go postal but you could see he wasn't happy and reminded Campbell how content he was to used the media in the past when it suited his (and Labour's) aims.

Labour and its main players certainly appear to have it in for Boulton and I wouldn't put it past them to keep pushing until he snaps.

Thanks for the link John. I find Boulton the most amiable of interviewers - to everyone.

Campbell is an unelected fixer, nothing more.

Labour once again spreads the merde on democracy. An unelected disaster wants to force another unelected potential disaster on us at the whim of a Labour party that has excelled in incompetence.

I think we would be better off calling in the Mafia.

Aren't they the mafia RA? They know enough of their tricks.
