Are You A Refusnik?

Yes it is an old cartoon. It's some considerable time since I noticed anyone enjoying a few puffs of a pipe and in today's society the chap on the right would surely object to being 'infected' by the second-hand smoke. Or would he? I digress.

The content of Radio5Live and Radio4 yesterday had me shaking my head in disbelief. Constant chatter about political polls; politicians' body language; wives hovering at their husbands' elbows; endless stage managed photo calls and other trivia.

All this while we have a country in trillions of pounds of debt, we have education systems (both here and in England) which provide little academic knowledge and prefers our children to know how to have sex, governments who put climate change above the poverty of our elderly and a Westminster government which is handing billions of pounds a year to corrupt governments under the label of 'aid'.

Richard North has summed it up rather neatly and I'm seriously considering joining his Refusniks party. Our media no longer conveys accurate information but political party press releases.

Is it just me, who is bored already with the influx of banality and cliches which will be drip fed to us until 6 May or is it the fact that I know there will be little change in how these islands are governed thereafter? It's a two-horse race with one of the horses being slightly easier on the eye, but a horse is a horse. Shame neither is someone we could respect as a leader. Maybe that's why my apathy, horse-speak is repetitive and limited.

Yup. Bored to tears. Just a lot of waffle and nothing concrete to help me decide.

I can't understadn for the life of me what their wives are doing? I'm not allowed to take mine to work with me, why are they?

As usual Mrs Clegg was the only one who had nothing to do with the nonsense (btw she's a bit nice isn't she?).

You'd think from the state she was in that Brown's wife would have been better occupied getting some ironing done. she was all wrinked...well, I mean her clothes were.

Have they not got kids to look after or something?

5 live have been shocking in their bias towards Labour today. I stood their shouting at the EBC presenters failing to ask any tough questions, they lack credibility, totally! On ebc Scozia they had non-BBC employees which was refreshing as they totally highlighted what was wrong with the corporation in simple straight fwd no nonsense terms.

You'd think the GE was exclusively in England judging by the coverage to date, thinking about dis-engaging for the next few weeks Im skull fecked!

Nope, it's not just you...

They shoot horses don't they? Wish someone would take a pop at the brown one.

If we had vets instead of doctors he'd of been put down a long time ago.

SR,

Could not agree more! The banality of the 'right-wing' blogging who are caught up in the trivia of this election is beyond belief.

Where are the articles about our lack of democracy? Where are the articles about politicians lying? Where are the articles about politicians wanting transparency and then being anything but, where honesty and truth are concerned?

Even the 'right-wing' blogosphere is caught up in the trivia- Heaven help us!

Aye Sue and if today was anything to go by, accordingly to CD, I'm glad I was out of range of the media.

Tris, Sarah Brown is running far more of her husband's campaign than we realise. That was her job when she met him. She has something to prove.

Cameron, stupidly, thinks he should meet like with like. His wife would be better keeping a dignified silence in the background.

CD yesterday was enough but seems it was worse today.

Of course it was all England, when did we figure, or Wales or N Ireland for that matter, in a UK general election?

Yet folk vote for unionists CD. I'm sure that's out of fear.

subrosa said...

Phew, thank goodness Sue.

subrosa said...

Oh TS, I forgot you'd come up with something like that. You're far too astute for me but your point is relevant. x

CH some vets are better health professionals for humans than what sits in GPs' surgeries. Sadly.

subrosa said...

WFW, don't you mean left-wing in your first sentence?

From here it seems it's only the right wing bloggers who are making an effort to highlight your points. Perhaps I'm right wing, I couldn't care less, but I do realise when my taxes are being poured down the Thames to keep a select few of the population in luxury while the majority of us pay.

Tris, there's a one-upmanship- in the battle of the wives.

Let's not forget, both the tories and labour have taken lessons about elections from the US. The women are like Stepford wives. They think it will win the female's over.

Not this one.

I'm utterly sick of it already, SR, it's all so superficial and pointless. The best we can hope for is that Gordoom is sent merrily on his way to a secure mental facility on 7th May.

Sorry Rosie, I'm with JuliaM. I'm just getting wound up. I'll be sorry on May the 7th. How can any political blogger be fed up with a GE that only comes around every five years or so, FFS? At least in Scotland we've got the Scottish Parliament Elections in between.

I'm fed up with the quality of debate DL. It's so shallow and lacks any substance.

subrosa said...

I'm sure there are many who would agree with you BS.

yep - it's sooo surface and image and spin. Not helped at all buy the main distributor of information - the BBC - giving for the simplest and most uncritical of coverage.

Interesting conversation in my household last night. My son, who's recently turned 18, said he couldn't understand why anyone cared what the wives looked like/thought/whatever. he doesn't know who he want's to vote for but feels that none of them are telling any real hard stories. He also complained that none of his classes at 6th Year in school really taught him anything actually practical and useful for going to university. Like budgeting, money management, how to deal with household (or student flat)bills. Instead they got endless classes on diversity and equality.

I guess all I'm doing is echoing others comments. I'd love to see the deep and searching interogations of MPs about the debt problems, about the expenses fraud/theft, about the sheer bloody incompetence of 13 years of government which has taken Britain to the edge of the cliff, can I rant on??? But it's not going to happen until the bailiffs (aka the IMF) are at the door and demanding repayments of their loans. By which time it will be too late for us mere "citizens".

Dept. of Is It Just Me? (subsection 733/d).

IIJM or has anybody else noticed that we get rolling coverage of what politicians are 'expected' to say, (i.e. a press release of a speech they will give), then coverage when they say it, then coverage of what they have said?

'Sonata form' I think it's called.

No, chloroform I think it's called.

I used to enjoy elections but I've got too old for that kind of thing. Viagla may be what I need.

subrosa said...

Rant on as much as you like Andrew. Many are frustrated by the shallowness of politicians these days.

subrosa said...

Sonata form Jim, excellent description. That's the way the media make their money these days. Investigative journalism has gone.

Auch I'm sure you don't need viagra to brighten up your day. :)

Rosy,

Viagla please. That wasn't a typo.

I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so.

Yeah. What's new.

Ooops sorry Jim. Is it the wild type you prefer?

SR is it just me noticing the use of language or are we getting groomed for 5 year fixed parliaments. More CHANGE!!!! All to make the EU assume prime status in the democratic sweepstakes?

subrosa said...

Incoming, you know someone said that to me last night - a person with a scant interest in politics too.

I think it's on the cards don't you?

Cleggie's wife is just getting on with her job.

Mrs Salmond rarely gets involved in any way.

I wonder Mrs Brown's young children don't heve need of her. She's not showing a good example to mothers, is she.

What worries me if she runs his campaigns is how much of the rest of his job is she doing.

subrosa said...

Clegg's wife was out with him today Tris. She was on TV doing her 'wife' bit.

Sarah Brown is a major part of his campaign I'm sure. She's nearly as important as he is. Some may say even more so.

Anonymous said...

Beg pardon SR. I've not seen news today. All week she was at work. She's a stunner compared with the other two though. A real looker.

Not that that has anything to do with her politics.

It seems the ladies like to see the wives out with the men. I really can't imagine why...

subrosa said...

All of my pals think it's nonsense Tris. But then again, we're coffin dodgers. ;)

Anonymous said...

Och, they are easy to dodge SR.

It is strange that women who are so adamant about their independence, like to see the wife trailing round after her husband wearing nice clothes (although that can't be the reason with Mrs Brown as she always looks like she fell out of Oxfam on a day when they didn't have her size.)

I see what you mean when you wrote elsewhere that men can be bigger bitches than women... that was a horrible but true thing to say... and I never notice what anyone wears unless it's wildly ridiculous or really cool!

subrosa said...

Love the description of Sarah Brown Tris - so accurate. She's obviously trying to follow Michele Obama by looking 'casual'.

She'd be far better sticking to a frock and jacket, the classic style that suits any figure but being very pally with the fashionistas, she seems to accept their advice. Sad.
