The Last of the 6 Nations

Another Saturday and the last three matches of the 6 Nations. We have Wales v Italy at the Millenium Stadium (KO 2.30pm), Ireland v Scotland at Croke Park (KO 5pm) and France v England at the Stade de France (KO 7.45pm).

All matches will be broadcast on BBC TV, the Red Button and online.

Scotland meet second the top of the standings in Ireland and England meet the top in France. It should be an exciting afternoon's rugby.

Here's a wee rugby story from one of my loyal readers. Do hope you enjoy it.

I had a business friend from the Borders who was also very keen on Rugby. As he worked in the West Country, he went to an England v Ireland match in Bristol where he fell in with three Irishmen who were obviously fairly senior executive types.

Coming out of the ground, a policeman was waiting by their car which was parked on the apron in front of a fire station. He said that without a word being spoken, two of these Irishmen started to fight. The policeman came over to sort it out whilst the third man ran to the car and drove off. By the time the policeman arrived, the other two were already shaking hands!

We don't think like that on this side of the water, do we?

Rugby? Are you joking? Pugilism on the run.

One of my many former employers played rugby, and ended up in court on a GBH charge for antics on the field. He got off, but only just.

I am pleased to say I have never watched even five minutes of this in my life.

It's not as bad as boxing of course.

I rather like it WW, much more interesting than football and even more interesting than boxing.

I'll watch the Scotland game but only if it's skillful and not just a hammering for us, but we don't have many outstanding players right now.

Irish pugilism.
As the A1 enters steamy north London there is a 'Irish' pub called the Archway Tavern. Back when they used to close at 10.30 on Sunday evenings this one managed to stay open until midnight, dunno why, maybe it had something to do with the Irish showbands that played there.

The audience were mostly Irish, (as were my friends), of all ages, male and female alike, all very relaxed but toward the end of the night it was not unusual for fist-fights to break out at the back. These punch-ups were routinely ignored by everybody else and only affected those directly involved.

At the stroke of midnight the band would launch into the Iriah National Anthem at which all stood to attention with many joining in the song including said pugilists.

As the last notes faded away they would start fighting again but everyone else left them to it as they made their way home.

Boys will be boys I suppose.

And I hope boys will always be boys banned. I won't tell you one of my experiences last time I was in Ireland but suffice to say I had a very thick head, lost voice and vague memories of being on a stage belting out Scottish songs.

SR, forgive me, but it sounds as though you'll only watch the highlights (so as to be sure that it's skillful and not a hammering)?

Where's the sport then..?

SR

Shall be watching with my boys and look fwd to a couple of good games. France will stuff England and Ireland will just beat Scotland, sadly but like the Guinness, I'll not be bitter!

BTS I'm not a good supporter I admit. My style is along the lines of pacing, tea-making and generally being unable to sit still if the game is tense. Even though I see most of it.

That's the difference between supporting while watching your own TV and being in the cheap seats at the match!

Are there cheap seats these days? I doubt it.

CD that is the expected result right enough. Just hope it's not all too embarrassing. :)

Lovely day here. Wind dropped.

Aye I saw that CD and thought I'd maybe write something about it.

Haven't read the Mail as yet. Maybe they were thinking a service proxy vote? That only lasts a year I think.

I support Scotland and Ireland in that order.

Team Scotland need another year to develop the devil may care, have go attitude and the flair and confidence to go with it.

But we should all be grateful to Ireland for showing spirit and commitment can match and often beat the larger gene pools, media mince and resources of larger contenders.

Well said RA. Ireland deserve their place this year and so do Scotland. I'd like to be as optimistic as you about us improving.

Ach Rosa! you just need to adopt a Pythonesque attitude - "Alway's look on the bright side of ..ite."

I'll sing that all day RA, just to ensure I'm on message. :)
