Afghanistan - More Tragedy

Yesterday a British soldier died as a result of an explosion which occurred in an area three kilometers south of Sangin district centre, in Heland province.

He served with 1st Battalion The Rifles (1 RIFLES) serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group.

Said Lietenant Colonel David Wakefield: "It is with a heavy heart I must inform you of the death of a second British soldier in a separate incident yesterday in the Sangin area of northern Helmand province.

"He was from 1 RIFLES, serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group, and was on a foot patrol near Patrol Base Almas, which is to the south of Sangin district centre, when he was killed by an explosion.

"We have lost one of our comrades and he will be sorely missed but his boldness and his selfless commitment to this fight will not be forgotten."

His next of kin have been informed and have my sympathy.

The death toll for this war now stands at 272 and still Gordon Brown will not give a withdrawal programme. With most other countries set to withdraw later this year or next year, we will be the only US 'ally' remaining. They all can't be wrong can they?

Subrosa,

My son is in the army 1 RIFLES and goes back to Afghanistan in November. So you can see how I take all this personally.

This young man, whose identity I know, was my son's great mate. A lovely lad.

It is criminal and yet NO political Party calls for them to be brought home.

I was hoping Alex Salmond would break the mould, sadly he hasn't!

Strapworld what can I say? I'm no old woman sitting in luxury in Perthsire (which I am), without a thought for those who take it personally. Without disclosing my own background, unless through a confidential email, all I can do on this blog is express my rage (not anger because that destroys me not those against me).

Like you I'm disappointed in the SG's response. Perhaps a post would perk them up, them again, the SNP don't quite like my comments because they want to be with what they think are the Bog Boys such as NATO and the EU.

If only they could see Scotland from a more mature point of view.

Strapworld, can I say
