Good morning Subrosa and welcome to 2010, isn't it splendid?
Blimey, never even got time to answer your quiz but I would have got 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9 correctly.

Hammer said...

Only 2 wrong - I said Holmes was also Scottish and underestimated the Diaspora. It helps that I spent Christmas working on a tour where many of these facts came up ;)

A Guid New Year tae ye tae Bug.

Morning banned. Don't know about splendid though! Another year older and it doesn't seem like 10 years since the turn of the century does it.

subrosa said...

Well done Hammer. You see you learned more than you thought when you were earning money. Happy New Year to you.

Happy New Year Subrosa et al!

As we remain unable to drive from our house to the main roads - walking poles put to good use - and becoming a little dottled by cabin-fever, I tried a few samples of Mr Brown's Britishness Test. It is intriguing how many questions are aimed at how one can access welfare, benefits and other forms of tax-payers largesse - but I suppose this form of 'wealth re-distribution is what attracts some non-British in the first place to become British? I did quite well but failed to select the correct characteristic desciptor for the Civil Service - I chose "Neutrality" but the correct answer was "Professional". I presume this is based on their professional prowess to enable MPs to reap expenses?

Ah well - let's hope the 'tensies' become an improvement on the noughties.

Happy New Year, Rosa. I missed the quiz - that's my excuse. Perhaps I had better take heed since this will no doubt become some kind of entrance test!

Rosie, I got them all right. Is there a prize?

Whoo-hoo! 8 out of ten! I'm happy with that. Cheers for publishing Subrosa, whoo-hoo!

Happy days are here again...

May everyone have a new year. As for Conan Doyle not really being Scottish, I suggest listening to him, here:

He wisnae Bulgarian, I can tell you that.

Happy New Year to you and yours Clarinda. Sorry to hear you're still having to walk on these untreated roads. It's the same here, a shambles.

Yes the Britishness test is exactly as you say - focussed on how generous we are to others.

I'm less optimistic than you, I don't see much change ahead. CallMeDave certainly doesn't have what it takes to make any impact.

subrosa said...

WW, I'm sure you've your adoption papers all in order.

Mind you, that's a good idea to have these questions as part of a 'selection process'. The Conan Doyle question certainly has created some very interesting correspondence.

subrosa said...

My dear DL, of course there's a prize.

Drum roll...

First prize:

The winner gets the privilege of composing and publishing the next quiz, so congratulations DL. :)

I think you share it with some others who will now refuse to admit they're smart!

subrosa said...

That was my score PD, well done you!

Jim, your link doesn't work. :(

It seems Jim that he was born here rather more by accident than design but the family immediately returned to England.

Jon Lellerman has sent me more details which is very kind of him.

subrosa said...

Jim, sorry I forgot to wish you a Very Happy New Year and many of them.

Jim Baxter said...

And to you and yours SR.

Nuisance link is to Youtube. Yes,
ACD is on Youtube. Just go to Youtube, type 'Conan Doyle' and there he is talking about his interests.

subrosa said...

Thanks Jim, watching it now.

Jim Baxter said...

SR,

Did you find yourself agreeing with me, i.e. he definitely wasn't Bulgarian with an accent like that?

subrosa said...

I did Jim. And I also sent the link to his biographer who also agrees with you and had no explanation as to why he had such an accent.

I'll try Jon again to see if he'll give an explanation.

Jim Baxter said...

SR,

Yes indeed. I'd even go so far out on a limb as to rule out that acccent being Irish, never mind Bulgarian, Doyle or no Doyle.

I'm no 'Enery 'Iggins meself but if the Prof has no ready explanation for the Great Man's odd inflections I would, most respectfully, be able to offer a strictly amateur explanation of my own modest devising. I'll be happy to post it, if necessary. I have no fear of being shot to shreds, inevitable though that is. I'm always ready to learn.

subrosa said...

Jim if you'd like to do a post about it then email it to me. I'd be happy to publish it (plus the video of course if you like).

I'd be very interested to know more too.

Jim Baxter said...

SR,

I wouldn't presume to take up a post on this question, interesting though it is, but thank you for the invitation. I may take you up on the offer of editorial consideration one day.

You know my methods Watson... etc..

Alexander Graham Bell wasn't Scottish either - never mind being born in South Charlotte St. and attending the Royal High etc., Ask any American.
