Afghanistan - Two Killed While Miliband Visits

Two more British soldiers have been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan. The soldiers, from Edinburgh based 3rd Battalion The Rifles, were killed yesterday while on foot patrol near Sanguin.

This latest waste of life takes the number of British troops killed in this war to 249 since 2001.

The deaths came as Foreign Secretary David Miliband arrived in the Afghan capital Kabul to discuss the country's future. In an interview with Reuters, Miliband called all governments to share the responsibility of protecting the world against terrorism.

"I think it's right that every country should look at what it can do and whether it can do more because in the end 'all for one and one for all' is the basis on which the NATO alliance works."

Could it be that other NATO countries have decided they are not supplying more troops to an unwinnable war and Miliband isn't happy? If you remember Bob Ainsworth, a few weeks ago, said we would provide another 500 troops and other European countries have said they would also contribute. He refused to say which other countries though didn't he?

Miliband's trip to Afghanistan comes ahead of a conference to be held in London on 28 January which will see the international community discuss strategy for Afghanistan.

Ten years on and world leaders still don't have a clue. The strategy should be get out now and bring our troops home. The majority of the people do not support this war, they see it for what it is - the invasion of a country which has never threatened our security here at home.

The actions of politicians are doing far more damage to our security than the country of Afghanistan.

I agree entirely. It's the actions of politicians that are jeopardising the security of our country. I say bring the troops home now, and concentrate on desperate domestic affairs!

Wouldn't it be better to be able to send 10,000 troops to Haiti rather than Afghanistan.

And let the troops defend our borders TT like they do in most other countries in these days of 'terror'.

That's too sensible Strathturret don't you think.

Strathturret, Haiti is so much more accessible than Obamastan. We wouldn't be able to flex all of our military technology over such a modest problem. Great powers and great leaders must be able to do great things.
