Dundee Sees The Light

Several days ago I posted this and am now delighted to report Dundee has seen the light and is now to include the Christmas message in the Winter Light Night event. Representatives from the Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church will join the procession and be allowed to address the crowds gathered for the celebrations.

Mr Letford, the Lord Provost said: "There has been great disappointment with the way {this issue} has been handled. It was a vague policy document that seems to have caught us on the hop. It is very disappointing the city's reputation has been tarnished."

He vowed the situation. "will all be sorted out for next year and we will not allow this to happen again."

Well done Dundee, it would have been quite easy to ignore the public protests and I commend that fact that an error was admitted and is now corrected.

Well they won the annual who's cancelled Christmas award for this year, I wonder who will win it next year. :-D

I'm glad it has been settled amicably. I note that the leader of one of the mosques too, had pointed out his disappointment that the word Christmas had been removed, so oit wasn't just Christians who were upset.

Once again though I wonder at the Christian church wanting to associate itself with what christmas has become. A feeding frenzie of greed and goodwill to all cash registers.

It's certainly not the message that Christ preached.

Now QM there's an idea for a wee poll on your blog. :)

I know the moslems in Dundee delight in our celebration of Christmas tris (well according to a friend who knows many) and they even distribute small gifts so Dundee is a city in which multiculturalism has succeeded. But then it hasn't happened in much of the UK or even Scotland.

It certainly is quite harmonious here Subrosa. Last year on Open Doors Day, I went to the central mosque, which was open, and enjoyed entertainment, ecellent food and some explanations of the faith and its truths, rather than some of the myths that surround it.

Faith fascinates me, although I have none myself and in some ways the idea of having it frightens me. Strange.

Good for Dundee, sadly we have to put up with 'Winterval' even though many of our few Moslems have no objection to Christmas and some even join in the non-religious stuff including house deorations and sending Christmas cards.
A Moslem student ( overseas ) recently asked me if it was OK to visit our Cathedral unaccompanied and I replied that it was certainly fine ( dunno what her uncles might have to say about it though ).

Ay banned, it's a tolerant place compared with some.

Tris, religion can be fascinating as a study but, as with everything, your informants need to be objective and in many cases they can't hold that line for long.
