Glasgow is soon to see the opening of its first 5 star hotel. It's time, in fact passed time, that Glasgow had a hotel of this quality and I'm sure it will be well patronised.
A consortium calling themselves the Townhouse Collection and composed of Channings, The Howard, The Bonham and the Edinburgh Residence bought the old Scottish Royal Automobile Club, Blythswood Square in 2006 and are presently in the last stage of renovating it as a luxury 5 star hotel.
According to the Blythswood Square Hotel website bed and breakfast rates average £180 - £285 per person per night and the hotel opens for business at the end of this month.
Now I know where to go for a peaceful cup of coffee next time I'm in Glasgow. It will be exciting to see just how well the building has been restored as I remember it from my childhood. I would be delighted to hear from any reader who does visit before I do and will be especially interested to hear what Wardog thinks, although I know his speciality is architecture not interior design!
Editor's Note and Update: I have to confess I did not check about other 5 star hotels in Glasgow and took the information from an article. There are another 3 within the city boundaries since I used to visit Glasgow regularly.

It will certainly be a high class change from what Blythswood Square is famous for at present.

In the early seventies I used to pass by that way on my road home after an evenings entertainment at the Highlanders Institute.
...and I was asked once if I wanted some beezness by a getting on a bit,lady.
What ever sort of beezness was that I wondered?
Needless to say, I declined.

A lady who's acquaintance I once made in The Highlander, told me she worked in Blythswood Square. Naturally I assumed it to be the RAC club, as she said she was in the hospitality industry! She later let slip after a wee bevvy, that "if she had another pair of legs she would open in Edinburgh." I made my excuses and left by the toilet window. I still get flash backs from that close encounter.

I read somewhere they're tidying up the gardens too brownlie. Removing the benches would be a start ;)
WfW, you may be surprised that a coffee in a place like that isn't much dearer than in a town cafe and you'll get a pot of it plus, hopefully, a wee biscuit.
Naw, now what would I want to go there for with an MSP? Unless of course wee Derek Brownlee happen to issue an invitation. :)

I'm really surprised at this - a city of the stature of Glasgow with no 5 star hotels?!?! Surely a gap in the market there!
(And there's no reason why the area's present activities won't continue. I worked in an Aberdeen hotel a few years back and half of my job involved keeping certain ladies away).
BoT, there are others I see on visitscotland, so the article which led me to write the post is wrong.
One Devonshire Gardens is One (I stayed there a few years ago and I'd give it 3 max - long story)
Radisson SAS another (never been inside it so can't comment)
Hilton Glasgow (would only give it 4, was tatty last time I visited)
Mar Hall Bishopton (never heard of it).
So I confess I'm not up to date.
BTW One Devonshire Gardens was only 4 star when I stayed. Gordon Ramsay had just packed up his restaurant and the place was in a total mess because they'd moved the dining room to suit Mr Ramsay and it was entirely in the wrong place. I used to love that hotel but I shan't darken its door ever again.
