Iraq Service of Remembrance

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend a service of remembrance in St Paul's Cathedral, to mark the end of combat operations in Iraq, this Friday.

The service will be an opportunity to honour the members of the UK forces and civil servants who served in Iraq and to remember those who gave their lives over the six year operation.

Attendance at the service will be by invitation only and the majority of the congregation will consist of serving and ex-serving veterans of the conflict, along with their commanders, the injured and families of those who died.

John Swinney, the Scottish Finance Secretary, will represent the Scottish government.

The service will be broadcast this Friday on BBC1, starting at 10.30am for those families and friends who did not receive an invitation, but wish to participate.

I'm fear that whilst the "combat" in Iraq may be over for the British military it is nowhere near being at an end for the population of that unfortunate country.

You're knowledge is far greater than mine brownlie, but I tend to agree with you.

The borders were wide open for a long time and thus allowed all and sundry entry while this 'conflict' was happening.

It's not just a tragedy, it's a blight on western society than we partook in it.

I hope that a similar kind of thing can be arranged in Edinburgh for our soldiers. It would be fitting for the head of state to attend that too and show her respect to the men who died on her service.

My thoughts turn too, to the kids in Iraq who had limbs blown off, or other horrific injuries, caused either by the bombs of the insurgents that the West allowed to come to Iraq once Saddam was no longer there to keep them out, or indeed by the bombs that America and the West dropped in the horrific Shock and Awe Campaign. I still have the image of these poor young people whose lives were ruined by the stupidity and greed of a few so-called leaders in the West.

One of these men was Blair, who now, if you please has a faith foundation, based on Christianity. I wonder if he is aware that his Jesus is supposed to have said "Suffer the little children to come unto me".

May he know no peace for what he did to these Iraqi children. May it haunt him forever.

Thanks so much FE, it was staring me in the face all the time.

I would like to see that too Tris, considering there are more Scots in our military than any other.

Really I don't think Blair will have any conscience. He's said his 10 Hail Marys and that's that.

Let's see what he says to the Iraq Inquiry.

Subrosa, I'm sure that like most things the Iraq inquiry will be fiddled. Everything else is. Too many important people have too much hanging on not being found out including the aforementioned Blair. I hope he chokes on his Hail Marys.

Incidentally I hear there is a campaign afoot to get President Mary Robinson of Ireland elected as President of the EU.

Now wouldn't that be better than God's personal assistant.

Oh I haven't heard that about Mary Robinson Tris, I must have a look to see what I can find.

Of course it would be better than the devil's PA.

There's where I saw it SR.....

That's great, thanks so much for the link Tris. Much appreciated.

wonder if there will be anyone there remembering Dr David Kelly or indeed Andrew Gilligan who lost his job and reputation trying to warn us about Dodgy Tony's dodgy dossier?

subrosa said...

I very much doubt if Dram. The crowd will have been well vetted.

It's actually bad that there is not an 'open' section for anyone who wants to give thanks in that way for the safe return of someone close to them.

But of course we couldn't have that could we - the great unwashed mixing with the elite.
