Glasgow Council's Job Creation Scheme

Margaret Doran, the former director of children and families for Glasgow City Council and who stepped down unexpectedly from her post, was given a combined redundancy package of £278,000.

A local authority spokeswoman said Ms Doran was given a redundancy payment of £64,000 as well as £29,000 in lieu of notice and a lump sum of £185,000 from the pension fund.

It is thought Ms Doran, whose salary was £120,000, left the council after relations with other senior council executives soured, partly as a result of a restructuring of departments at the end of last year. She was originally appointed in 2007 as executive director of a combined department of education and social work services with an £80m budget. The council's vision was to transform the fortunes of children from some of the UK's most deprived communities by bringing together the two services.

However, in December the council's executive committee decided to break up the new department after concerns it was too large and unwieldy - leaving Ms Doran effectively in charge only of education, which already had its own director.

It is understood Ms Doran, who is married to Michael Connarty, Labour MP for Linlithgow and Falkirk East, was concerned about the decision while, at the same time, others questioned whether her role was still a necessity.

The fact that Ms Doran is married to an MP I'm sure has nothing to do with her acquiring the post in 2007.

If you ever fancy a job with Glasgow Council make sure it holds a decent salary and then, after a couple of years, you too can negotiate handsome redundancy and early retirement terms. As a Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "It is standard practice to compensate people for redundancy and early retirement."

Needless to say Sub Rosa there are those and such as those, some animals are more equal than other animals, etc etc.

A normal worker who was in her position would be offered redeployment to whatever was available, Council wide, like it or lump it - if you don't like it there's the door.

And they can't cash in their pensions early either.

And of course she ain't the only politicians wife - there is Mrs McConnell, Director of Culture and Sport, and also there is Mrs Des Browne who works for GHA (ex council housing) and of course they handed Lesley Quinn a top job at City Building 'though what her qualifications are for runing a building and maintenance outfit God only knows.

It's just a tad annoying.

Observer, good of you to comment. I knew about Mrs McConnell of course but not about Mrs Des Browne and I remember the lovely Lesley touting her wares around when she wanted to give up running Scottish labour.

I should have put the fact that most can't cash in their pensions early in the post but you've done it for me now. Thanks.

Don't be annoyed, it's not good for your health.

Jeff "SNP Tactical Voting" posted on this last week - regardless to say that in the current climate with no sign of the end of the New Labour created recession, to see another corruption story regarding one of our elected representitives, disgusting is the only word to describe it.

When Gordon Brown promised that the recession would be over by Christmas I suspect that what he meant was that it would be over for Labour MPs, Lords and their spouses, not for us "ordinary" people. We may have to wait another 50 years till the debt is paid off.

I wonder how much longer us "ordinary" common or garden folk are going to put up with this?

Mind, she looks a bit like she could do with retirement in that pic. A wee bitty haggard don't you think. It must be hard work hanging around Glasgow Council like a spare part.

I'm glad you posted it, the Evening Times carried the story but very few other papers have given the story space. I think in the run up to the Glasgow North East by-election, it's the story that should resurface, time and time again, until a full explanation is given by Glasgow City Council.

I blogged the story the other day and going by my stats it has been picked up by a few other sites.

I couldn't believe that a commenter over at SNP Tactical voting had the balls to defend it.

Rab I didn't see it on yours, saw it in the paper on Friday or Saturday I think and put it in my evernote.

How can anyone defend that other than someone who thinks they may be in the same position?

Thanks Monty.

Oh dear Tris, if she looks haggard on the salary she had, then there's no hope for me at all. :)

Yes, well, if anyone in Glasgow North East complains about schools being closed Purcell and his Labour mob can say that they "sacked" the person responsible on the wisnaeme principle.

For a fee brownlie, for a fee. I thought all this nepotism had been stopped in Glasgow council. Seems it still goes on but is well camouflaged.
