Further Destruction of Scotland by Westminster MPs

Plane coming into land at Glasgow

Fourteen MPs have signed a motion calling for domestic flights to be phased out by the end of next year if Britain is to avoid "a climate emergency".

Members of all three main UK parties have called for the radical move as part of a raft of measures designed to reduce environmental damage.

At least two hours of prime time television per week should be used to warn (brainwash *) people of the climate change crisis facing the world the MPs say and a speed limit of 55mph should be introduced on roads.

The majority of money spent on lifting the economy out of recession should go on green measures, the motion says, with the package as a whole sending out a positive signal to other countries ahead of UN talks on a climate change deal which will take place in Copenhagen this December.

I wasn't going to name these MPs but have decided to do so.

Labour: Colin Challen (Morley and Rothwell) - proposer
John Austin (Erith and Thamesmead)
Michael Clapham (Barnsley W and Peniston)
Ann Cryer (Keighley)
David Drew (Stroud)
Neil Gerrard (Walthamstow)
Stephen Hepburn (Jarrow)
Lindsay Hoyle (Chorley)
John McDonnell (Hayes and Harlington)
Stephen Pound (Ealing N)

Tory: Peter Bottomly (Worthing W)

Libdems: Mike Hancock (Portsmouth S)
Paul Holmes (Chesterfield)
Andrew Stunell (Hazel Grove)

Not one Scottish MP of course, not yet anyway. David Farrer, who kindly drew my attention to this, writes his own thoughts on the matter. Read them here.

Oh, it's "Climate Emergency" now ? Yet they haven't even got us used to Climate Burning. Why not just go straight to the endgame and call it " Climate Armageddon And It's All your Fault "

They are ratcheting up the panic because they worry about so many of us catching on to Climate Change as bollox and they want to get their regulations in place.

Couldn't put it better myself banned. You should have written this post. :)

I travel to London once a month, much prefer the train to be honest, and if you book far enough in advance 1st class tickets are not that much more expensive.

What about anyone going to Orkney or the Shetland Isles? Have they been from Aberdeen to London on a train? It's nae fun like!

This is all very nice, but what impact will it have on businesses?

I know that thousands of men and women travel from Glasgow, Embra, Aberdeen and Inverness to meet their international flights departing from one of the London hubs.

Without these vital domestic links it will be chaotic.

I fly up to 40 times a year and long ago (actually, around the time the English smoking ban was enacted) I switched from BA to KLM. You could then, and you can now, have a quick smoke at Schiphol before you jump onto your next flight.

I never really understood why they banned smoking in airports. Considering that one plane firing up its engines produces more carcinogens in ten minutes than all smoking passengers could in 2 years. And guess who is breathing in all that shite? Yep. The whey-faced anti-smokers and the rest of us.

I dedicate a lot of time when arranging my travel plans so that I do not stay in hotels that feel they can do without smokers money, and I use airports that allow choice. I personally cost anti-smoker airports and anti-smoker hotels around £135,000 last year. I am very pleased with my boycotting efforts.

I meandered a bit there. Sorry.

Put in a global context, stopping 20 flights a day from Glasgow will achieve nothing. Absolutely nothing.

We seem destined to stand by and watch, as ever more stupid decisions are taken that hurt more than they heal.

CR.

I too much prefer the train Chris, but it's not always easy to book far in advance.

Also if you do you have get to an airport for a connection that can be a nightmare.

It's a long time since I did that journey by train BoT. Had to wait for ages at Edinburgh so the sleeper carriages could be added.

No I never liked the sleepers, not second class anyway.

Definitely the fastest way to lose viewers tris.

May I commend you for sticking to your principles CR - and that's not because I'm also a smoker.

I respect businesses who also stick to their principles of banning smoking but I don't support them unless absolutely necessary.

Once upon a time you could nip out the fire door at Edinburgh for a smoke, but alas no longer. That too is taboo.

Uh Huh, I guess you could say that I'm the victim of Westmidden control freaks too.

No smoking in the workplace apparently

...and that according to the wee sticker on the windscreen includes my company vehicle.

Not that I have carried any passengers since those laws have come into force either. The only other person to have entered the vehicle has been a mechanic during periodical servicing of same.

...and did you know that a still from a CCTV camera could be the only evidence required to convict a ciggy holding driver of driving without due care and attention.

...and that will be the minimum of three points on their license and an enforced fiscal contribution to the powers that be, ta verra much.

Even if a member of staff has a ciggy during their break, they now have to change out of their work uniforms and be at least ten metres away from the company premises.

...and is it not a pity that the present Westmidden governance and previous Embra 'executives' had not the same due consideration for other harmful'vices' and avoided the chumminess with the lobbyists, consultants and other vested interests in the trade of alcohol.

Isn't it all sickening wisnaeme?

There we have MPs and their pals all glugging down alcohol within yards of their workplace and yet we're criminals if we smoke within hundreds of yards.

I really don't know when it will end. The tories will continue this believe me.

If it stops any more of your ideological healthist hysterics popping down to London for a quick hector, I'm all for it. ;-)

I wonder whether there was a promise of a drink at the end of this motion?

subrosa said...

Dick, there's no way I'd certainly pop down to London for a quick anything.

At least I can smoke outside my own back door here - until the Righteous start shouting I'm poisoning my garden of course.

Billy, I was hoping they'd had the drink before they conjured it up. Notice though, they're mainly all troughers who live in the south.
