Afghanistan Toll Increases to 222

A British soldier has been killed by a blast in southern Afghanistan, the MoD have reported.

The serviceman, from the Royal Military Police, died while on a foot patrol near Gereshk district centre in Helmand Province yesterday morning.

The sacrifice of our young now reaches 222 and there is still no sign of a strategy from government. Meanwhile these soldiers continue their deployment and continue to die.

My condolences to his family.

It's definitely going that way OR don't you think.

Thousands of military out there in these conditions while the men who make the decisions mess around wondering what to do.

Wonderful eh?

subrosa,

I think I posted on here before that sad and dreaded news like this would become so common-place that it would be relegated in the papers to a few column inches whilst the papers concentrate on who Jordan is currently shagging, who won x-factor and how Gordon saved the universe.

It is summed up in the song "War Correspondent" by Eric Bogle where the news reader refers to Companies making record profits, the price of meat going up, cricketers losing the Ashes and, as an afterthought, that three soldiers had been killed.

I'll bet that, even if he is a Fifer, that Brown has no Eric Bogle songs on his i-pod.

I'd bet on that too Brownlie. Mind you neither have I.

So sad these men out there doing their utmost to stay alive while the politicians at home give themselves 3 weeks holiday over Christmas and New Year.

Disgusting really.

subrosa,

Look up the lyrics of War Correspondent, No-man's Land, The band played Waltzing Matilda etc etc all by Eric Bogle. Well worth reading.

Will do it once I've been shopping Brownlie. Just waiting until around 7pm for the shops to be less busy.

Bought my poppy today. Can you tell me if the fallen are being added to their local memorials?

It always strikes me, as I rove the land, no matter how poor the Glen or town, you'll usually find a memorial. What a sacrifice this country has made down the years. Next time you get to Peebles have a look at the memorial there. It's a cracker (located in the court yard of the old town hall). Look at the names from the wee ferm toons and villages (from both wars) see the same names from different generations, then think of the size of those places and the impact the losses must have had. And then get really angry that the tossers have put our sons and daughters in harms way - again!

Dram, good for you, I haven't bought mine yet but will do next week.

I know that statue very well. My Dad's office was located in that wee courtyard, through the pend. Many times I read the names of it while I waited for him to return from business elsewhere.

You've just reminded me, I must put a poppy reminder on here.
