Perth Loses Its Oldest Auctioneers

The River Tay runs through the attractive city of Perth which is a vibrant destination for shoppers and those who wish a good quality of life in Scotland.

Many businesses in the city are family run and have been operating for generations, so it's with some sadness I read the demise of one of its oldest auction houses, Loves of Perth.

Many Scots will have had dealings with Loves, if not to sell a special piece of jewelry, a valuable book or a family heirloom - they may have wanted to purchase a particular item and there was nowhere better than Loves to start your search. The staff were most knowledgeable and if they didn't know an answer to your question, they would find someone who could help.

Sadly, Loves hasn't dipped out of business with a flourish, but have slipped away leaving a trail of debt and disappointed customers.

One website describes them as follows:

Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles auctions, Government Auctions UK

Loves Auction Rooms, founded in 1869 to serve the City and County of Perth, are today one of the country's leading independent auction houses.

Our salerooms are now established as a major national auction centre with an ever-increasing international following. Perth's central location, with fast motorway access to international airports, enables buyers from far afield to attend our sales with ease.

Another sign of the financial failure of the UK government perhaps but in this economic climate I would have thought quality sale rooms would be thriving. It obviously wasn't so for Loves. I would have expected a more honourable end to this once reputable auction house as I too have dealt with them over the years and I do hope they resolve the outstanding problems of their customers who handed over goods on trust - these people deserve nothing less.

I’m very fond of Perth, thank you S/R for waxing lyrical on that. It’s a real shame about Loves- thank you very much Gordon Brown.

The buildings were in Canal Street Munguin, a saleroom either side of the road. Wonderful rambling salerooms too.

Such a shame because there are now no specialist auctioneers in Perth.
