Is Another War in the Offing?

I found this staged announcement, from Obama, Brown and Sarkozy, chilling when I watched it live last week. In fact I'd go as far to say the presentation had a sinister aura.

First thought that sprang to mind was 'this is a precursor speech to war with Iran' and I'm not the only person to think so.

Of course there are always other opinions and James Cusick provides one:

Over the next few crucial months, Obama may need to look to Brown as his “global” ally and Brown will be more than happy to take the role as international global statesman as they both focus on the crisis of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

By accident, and certainly not by any choreography, Brown has been handed a global crisis that could transform his last months in office. The crisis centres on a secret Iranian nuclear enrichment plant and demands that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors be given access to the hidden plant at Qom in Iran. In the absence of co-operation by the Iranians, a new regime of sanctions will be imposed with the potential backing of Russia.

The worrying part is that, when questioned, David Miliband immediately refused to rule out the option of military action.

Iain MacWhirter contributed to this subject today too:

Perhaps a small new war might save Gordon’s bacon. The refusal by the foreign secretary, David Miliband, to rule out military action against Iran for developing a second uranium enrichment plant, suggests that Britain is not going to complain too loudly if Israel bombs it, as they did the Osirak plant in Iraq in 1981. There is nothing like heightened international tension to bolster a political leader.

Once I read that when politicians get the taste for war they never stop being warmongers. I do wish I could remember who wrote that because it becomes more believable each day.

Archives reveal ‘difficulties’ of oil-rich Scotland

In 1975 the prospect of Scottish independence — the SNP then had 11 MPs and a third of the popular vote — and its impact on North Sea oil revenues loomed large in the discussions. The British Government anticipated the “most serious difficulties” for the English economy should an independent Scotland have become “the Kuwait of the West” and secure a majority of revenue from oil.

Garlick drew on the research of other civil servants including Stuart Scott-Whyte and Gavin McCrone, the chief economist at the Scottish Office. He found that while increased oil revenues would bring a new prosperity for Scotland, the opposite impact would be felt south of the Border.

The English economy would be “unduly depressed” up to five years, with workers earning up to 30 per cent less than their Scottish counterparts, factors which would generate “extreme hostility” towards Scotland.

Strangely enough Stuart, I'm just writing a post for later using that very article. I'd love to have a few hours with some of these files.

Brace yourself Subrosa, you are absolutely correct to be concerned - this is 'Shock Doctrine' in action, More war deaths to further one's political ambitions are inexcusable, but easy when you are already committed to two others.

Yup. There's nothing like a war to take the sheeple's mind off things.

We have all known for years that Iran is up to no good, the timing of the announcement to coincide with G20 summit (which was supposed to be them explaining how they will fix the economy, don't make me laugh) was cynical in the extreme.

Iran holds all the cards because they can stop the flow of middle east oil through the Straits of Hormuz. I don't believe that their intention is produce to a bomb as it would cost to much, just winding the West up.

There are a lot more questions to be answered Mark. I wonder why the MSM haven't made more of this.

I don't believe any of them CH. Aye that was an interesting post from Monty.

A sad indictment of corrupt politicians and how we trusted them.

However, we must go forward now and gain the best bargain we can.

As I said Polaris, once politicians get the taste for war...

I suppose it's the ultimate power factor 'I can kill a citizen legally' which turns them into madmen.

Notice how Gordon stands close to Obamo be in the greater Obama-aura.

Sarkozy, on the other hand stands off Obama. It is not that he is not lapping up the Obama photo-op. It is that he is so small he cannot be seen standing beside one grown up, and it is not Brown.

It was nauseating to watch live FC, it looked like Brown was rubbing shoulders with Obama some of the time.

Sarkozy stood on the sidelines watching the pantomime.

SR,

No, not another war, UK Plc is officially skint - you should see the cut backs we're making! Or should that be "efficiencies?"!!!

Crazy D

If you make any more cutbacks CD you'll be having to learn to walk on water not ail on it.

Clearing out the MoD might be a far better start for 'efficiencies' don't you think.

I take Cynical Highlander's view and simply add Iranian nationalism and a wish to highlight the west's (and especially the USA's) hypocrisy and double standards about Israel.

subrosa said...

Morning Richard. I don't know if Iran wouldn't fire because they manage to find money from somewhere don't they.

Yes the US have a great deal to answer for, in the past, in the present and no doubt in the future.

Don't worry about a war with Iran. I am sure 'all' they will do is bomb a few site. So I believe we are looking at deaths in their thousands rather than the millions.

Very cynical Prof. After all, what's a few thousand deaths in the war against terrorism? All to keep terrorists off our streets of course...
