Dan Hannan's Message to the People of Ireland

I feel so uncomfortable agreeing with a wee tory nyaff like Hannan, but the bugger's right. I hope the Irish give it the two-finger salute again, and I desperately hope that the SNP can collect its thoughts on this. Surely we now have the confidence to face down those who would call us 'isolationist' just because we want nothing to do with this super-corporation called the EU?

Are the Irish going to listen to an English an English conservative.
As mad Dan(Cameron himself called him mental) said the Irish history since 1920 perhaps the Irish might consider a little bit longer time frame(The English not looking very benign now)

Dan you are absolutely the wrong person to advise the Irish(but they already know that)

Brave of you not to shoot the messenger Vronsky.

I too wish the SNP would look at Switzerland and Scandanavia to see how they all work within the Council of Europe and no further.

Niko, when you watch that Asda advert about saving money, is it the actor who persuades you or the message?

Yeah - one spots the odd post where one doesn't want to be the first to respond, n'est-ce pas? You watch for the fall of fire before you move, dontcha?

However, I'll always be forward about this. We on the left (which I courteously accept might not include you, sr) need to wrest this argument out of the hands of the Hannans of the world. On my 19th Drambuie shandy here, and quickly becoming too tired and emotional to talk, so just this link will have to do.

Yes you do indeed Vronsky.

Today's 'left' isn't the left I was proud to belong to for years Vronsky, so yes I suppose you would say I've moved to the middle maybe middle-right ground these days. The left is too full of do-gooders who think they're going to save the world and includes the ridiculous PC brigade which we have and continue to allow to sweep away many of our fine traditions.

I completely agree the debate has to be wider and like you I'm sad the SNP are sticking so hard to the 'independence in Europe' policy.

Drambuie shandy? I used to love the stuff, Drambuie that is. Perhaps I'll treat myself to a bottle at Christmas - just to decorate the cupboard of course.

Many thanks for the link.

I think Niko has a point SR.

Advertisers usually try to find someone who will appeal to their target audience.

In a way I quite like this guy. He's quite funny and I think quite clever. I just doubt that the Irish will want to listen to an English Tory toff.

Listening to what he says in this clip, I'm wondering what he feels about the Scottish situation.

He mentions being ruled from another country by people they didn't elect. Isn't that exactly what will happen after the next election. We will be ruled, from London, by a pile of posh Eton boys whilst we largly voted Labour and SNP.

I'd love to hear him talk about that.

Incidentally, I have always been a fan of the EU on the basis that it was far more left wing than any government we would get here, and most of the countries in it were more prosperous than us. Any influences it had on the UK were likely to trim the excesses of the right wing governments we always get in London.

I don't think we would require that in Scotland. We have a more people-centric government, and we would undoubtedly have PR. We wouldn't need the softening influences of the EU. EFTA might do just as well (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Leichtenstein.... lovely)

I see Niko's point tris and understand where he's coming from, but people with any intelligence won't be put off a message just because someone has a toff's accent will they?

Me too, how about you email Dan Hannan and ask his opinion of Scottish devolution.

Tris, I'll be posting a video on the EU later today and it's imperative you watch/listen to it. It's 45 minutes long but it should have been broadcast on primetime TV. Somehow I think it was made for TV but I never saw it.

Once you've seen it then tell me what you think of the EU.

hehe SR

OK. Look forward to it. Probably won't be able to comment till tomorrow (got company). But I'll do that.

I know in advance that there is much wrong with it, it costs a fortune and it's incredibly corrupt (rather like any government), and as I say, I only liked it because it kept Atilla the Blair and his right wing nonsense at bay.

I will email mr Hannan and ask for his views on Scotland... good idea!
